My mom sent me this, pretty cool if you ask me. OK, so who actually remembers the Ventures and the album, “Walk Don’t Run”? It was the first “HI-FI” album I ever heard played on a “HI FI” console record player. (Which belonged to one of my friend’s parents - we only had a radio, with a 33 1/2 rpm, 78 rpm, and 45 rpm [with center inserts] player that sure wasn’t “HI FI”!) Remember the Ventures? An instrumental rock band from the 60’s. Their biggest hit was "Wipeout", but their first hit was "Walk Don't Run".Their original 17 year old drummer left after 8 months to join the Air Force He came back for a reunion to play "Walk Don't Run" with them again. Guess what he is now! Ventures

That is Great, being a class of '65 high school grad from sunny California, I listened to a lot of Surf music, Ventures was on top of the list. Also I am a Air Force Retired Master Sargent, not even close to what George is. Very cool!

I'm not old enough to really remember the Ventures, but I have heard of them. I missed them and all of the really great 60s music by a generation, or about 7 years. Also missed the "heyday" of cruising the strip and all the cool cars. Of course, I HAVE experienced all this stuff later, after the time period was gone, by buying and restoring cars of the period and buying the reissued music. I guess I also have to look at the bright side of it; I missed being drafted for Vietnam!

You'd all remember the Shadows.I remember "Walk don't run" but not the band .It is actually played a lot as background music.I was about 9 or 10 I guess when the Shadows came around. https://youtu.be/EzgbcyfJgfQ

Actually Paul, I doubt that many of my fellow Yanks would remember The Shadows, as first they were the backing band for Cliff Richard and who himself for the most part never made it that big here in the States, but who of course was very popular in the rest of the English speaking world and just before The Beatles would change Pop music forever.
And secondly, and another reason I stated my doubts about my fellow Yanks remembering The Shadows was that even this song "Apache" that you linked this YouTube video of and one of their biggest hits, would be recorded by Danish jazz guitarist Jorgen Ingmann a year after The Shadows recorded it, and IT would be the version that would climb the American Pop Charts in 1961 and hit #2 that year, and the one I remember hearing a lot on the radio as a 9 year old kid in California, and not the version The Shadows recorded.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

AND, seein' as how I'm "setting the record straight" here(pun intended), it was stated earlier by the OP that "the Ventures biggest hit was 'Wipe Out'", but actually that would the biggest hit for another of the "surf rock" groups of that era, The Surfaris. The Ventures biggest hits would in fact be "Walk, Don't Run" and their recording of the theme music for the popular television program of the late-'60s, "Hawaii Five-O". I remember the music within a few bars I could have air guitared along with Apache but knowing the name of the band the Shadows would be way beyond my depth of musicality. I believe Keith talks a bit about them in his autobiography.

I guess the Shadows weren't that big in the US.As Dwight said they were big in the UK, but then the Beatles came along and the rest was history as they say.

And don't think that I FOR ONE, don't appreciate you being the whourehouse, (ooops, I meant warehouse ) of knowledge you are, Dwight. That free's up my mind from such a burdan and allows me to focus on more important things!

Yeah, I always liked that recording too, Ron.
And, after doing a little research here, I discovered that The Tornados' Telstar would be only the second "pre-British Invasion" British recording to hit No.1 on the American Top 100 Pop charts, and with only another memorable British instrumental recording preceding it to the top of the American charts in the year 1962...the haunting tune written and performed by British clarinetist Acker Bilk, "Stranger on the Shore".
(...I always loved that recording too)

Great find Ian! Oh yes I remember the Ventures. Seems like the General was having a great time joining the band again.
