IIRC, one of the threads gave the actual serial number when the change was made, but I couldn't locate that. I believe it was on the '06 790s. My 11/05 build date 790 has the newer design. Not sure about the 865s.
just to further muddy the waters: I have a 05 speedmaster that was a 865 motor, the bike came off the line in November of 2004. It had the newer design breather. It is one of the entirely black case motors.
last fall, I did put on the TTP kit as I was doing the clutch anyway. But close to 40K miles and it had not broken yet.
