Just a guess on my part, but I'd bet the village atheists were saying something similar a thousand years ago.
They were, they were Buddhist, Gnostic, or Liars. Liars were important 1000 years ago. Thinking Crusades, inquisitions etc. Picking the faith of the local power was the best way to keep your head. Lying was the best way to survive.
