I think most of the people I ride w here care more about handling than a pushed out fork. But I agree with you in general Dwight that most cruiser owners care about the "look" rather than handling. IMO w the original America And SM we had both.

On another subject re the new Speedie, I have been kind of having a feud w a guy on the TBird forum about the new SM even really being a cruiser. I contend that a Bobber is more a sub category of a cruiser and thus if the new SM is based on it then it is a Cruiser too. He says no way in hell a Bobber is not a Cruiser and neither is the new speedie. He says Triumph or no one will call it a cruiser when in fact the article Mike found w the first spy shots are calling it the Triumph new cruiser line and hinting that there will be more than one.

Yep Paul, I've said many times in the past that despite the 33 degree raked-out front ends on our bikes which precipitate slower turn-ins, they somehow do handle pretty well even in the twisties, and especially so given their "slower" steering geometry.

To some small degree Paul, I'll have to agree with the gentleman's opinion, as just from the pictures I've seen here of this new SM, in my opinion the only thing that really says "cruiser" about it to me are the forward mounted foot controls.

Reusing the Bobber frame for the Speedmaster saves Triumph a lot of money and a side benefit is an owner might be able to use the Bobber parts to install mid controls on the new Speedmaster...if that's what they prefer.

Yes Dwight the more I look the more I see a bobber with a dual seat set up.

And the more I look at it Paul, and probably because of its "softtail" rear end which mimics pre-swingarm hardtail Triumphs such as the original prewar 1938 Speed Twin and other immediate postwar Triumphs, the more it's reminding me of those, and what would've been designated back then as "roadsters". But, with the difference being those forward mounted foot controls on the new SM.

And which once again in my view, would be the ONLY thing about the new SM that would or could possibly define it with the more modern designation of "cruiser".

Overall though, I think its a damn good lookin' retro bike, and one which would and should be much more practical to own than the Bobber.

(...but I wouldn't be interested in owning one, and because I've found I don't like forward foot controls which necessitate the operator sitting on their tailbone...and thus the very reason some six or seven years ago now I designed and built mid-located foot pegs and controls and bolted them to my 2002 BA...I also feel more in control of my bike while "spiritedly" riding the twisties around here in Arizona without my feet sticking out forward)

I agree the only thing I have forward controls for is my busted knee.I bought a Hyde footpeg relocation set awhile back and they move the controls back 4" on my model BA and 2" on the newer models. The position suited me and allowed a bit more control and"down low" cornering but the brackets bent. Supposedly because they had Triumph "T"s cut out of the middle of them.Hyde sent a set without the cut outs which supposedly fixes the bending [free of charge.] but I haven't used them yet.

Well, I suppose if ya wanna put it THAT way OB, then I'd probably have 12,000 "other reasons" why I'd not buy one of your beloved Harley-Davidsons.

And, it would start with the thought that they're as ubiquitous* an item as anything out there.

(*-ubiquitous: adjective-- commonplace ; omnipresent i.e. as in every other swingin' dick out there already owns one)

Same as the Street Twin, Bonnies are 3.8. Bobber is 2.4
These new twins get much better milage that the earlier bikes.

However 65 mpg claimed. So figure around 58 mpg on the road.
You'll need fuel in a 145 miles, that's long enough in the saddle for me. I'll need to whiz before that

I'd need to test ride one but I rode a Kawasaki cruiser with a fat front tire like that and there was a fair amount of wheel "flop" doing slow turns.About 100miles is enough for me then a rest stop.I don't like beach bars but we'll see.I'm still wishing they'd just put the 1200cc motor in a bike styled like our BA/SM.

If it truly will get 65 mpg, then a three gallon tank should work. I rarely go farther than 120 miles without a stop.

This says they've adjusted the forks for the bigger tire so it handles as it should.
There's also a drawing on the bottom of this article with a blue one.I hope they bring this colour out.

Was looking at a review on Motorcycle.com posted 2 hours ago. Showed a lot of different pictures. I have to say I like it. I think Triumph did a good job NOT making it look like a Bobber. Offered in red also. The article said it would be in showrooms by Feb 2018.

I like it over all especially ribbed fenders but wish they were longer. Don't like the head light or exhaust but do like the chrome on the side of the head light like the old 50s nacelle. In general I do like it. I might even be persuded to buy one even with the radiator. I love the FI looking like the monoblock, very well done!

of all the clutch cover designs they could have modeled after, they went for the 70's style... not bad, but not my favorite. overall, I think it hit all the marks that we have been asking for all these years since they got rid of spokes and knee indents

No plastic console, spokes, dual discs upfront, fat front tire, even retro eyebrow badges. I vote, Triumph is back on track to market a winner.

That engine is seductive though. Why couldn't they drop that into an America or old Speedmaster?Anyway it looks better than the bobber IMO.

My first impression is this is a home run. I will have to see it in person.

My only concern is they are wanting this to replace the America, Speedmaster, and T-Bird.

Not sure it will have the weight to be comfortable doing interstate miles. Right Paul.

1200cc water cooled should be plenty to push her down the road.

No desire to replace my America, but I would own one of these.

Overall it isn't bad. I'm still not thrilled with the 3.1 gallon tank but as long as it can make it at least 150 miles between fill ups it's acceptable. I don't care for the 16 inch rims at all. I would be curious to know if the 18 and 17 inch rims from the T120s would be a direct swap. I do like that they were able to keep the weight down close ours at 541 lbs. I personally want to wait and see what they do with the new America and Thunderbird models in the next couple of years.

The Thunderbird line is gone as of 2018. I highly doubt whether they will bring the America name back either.

Well I have had 2 Tbirds since 2010 and have been spoiled w the highway ride especially w the Commander. I doubt if I would want to go back to a lighter bike for long distance touring.

You may be right on the America moniker. I know that the current version of the Thunderbird is done but I doubt that Triumph has no plans for another version, perhaps one with a larger/big bore or high output/Thruxton motor type cruiser version that will be more suitable to touring .

I know what you mean....I also need a heavier bike....not sure why but they're just less stressed on long hard runs.....but for me I'd avoid the Thunderbird( everyone yawn at this point) .
In fact I'm test riding a Honda VTX 1800 tomorrow.

Same here, not big on heavy bikes...I think they will bring out another america style version but whether it gets the same name who knows...I think the speedmaster makes a better bobber than the bobber..

I'm just thinking Triumph probably did good sales wise releasing the Bobber first.I think the speedmaster sales will outstrip the bobber.I could be wrong.I remember I was once.
