My bike went in for a service today. No problems, and they've done a decent job, but...the charge for labour was £45 ($83.25) per hour (Charged 3 1/2 hours labour for a 2 year service - inspection, oil change, brake fluid change, dismantle and clean calipers).

I'd guess the mechanic makes £10-£15 (£18-$28) per hour? I appreciate that the dealer has to pay his rent, heating, tools etc in addition to the mechanic, but £45 an hour seems a bit steep.

Is this about average?

(Before anyone suggests it, I'll be doing my own servicing from now on, but I wanted to get the bike dealer serviced while it's still in the warranty period).

The sad thing is, it sounds about right

Each time I book the bike in for a dealer service, he says the same thing "ooh, it's the expensive one!"

Last time he said it, I told him he says that every time ... he looked away a bit guilty!!

The dealers rate here in Tucson is $70.00 dollars an hour. I figure its a good reason to learn as much about the bike and even invest in some tools to do 99% of the maintenance yourself whenever possible. One can buy a few tools for the cost of three hours of labor.

In that respect this site is a true Godsend.

$75 USD here in the mid-west, $85 for classics and he adds a $5 shop charge for misc. i.e. rags,gloves, WD40 etc.

I never asked (just too scared)but I'm thinking my dealer charges in the neighborhood of $50.00 an hour USD.

$60.00 / hour which makes for $100.00 + oil changes!!!!!!
Looking at letting my dealer do the 12000 mile valve check and adjust (i hope) Do not feel confident enough to do it my self and have never watched one....... watch one, do one, teach one.......

Yeah I think my local dealer is $60 also. Apparently that's pretty reasonable.
