Just back from my trusted Triumph dealer where I'm having some stuff done that I don't want to do myself...... He said he's been told that the new cruisers will indeed be here for next year but that they'll use the 900 engine. Hmmm.... He's lent me one of the 900 scramblers and, though it's a nice bike and smoother at low revs ( only got 400miles on it so Im reluctant to wring it's neck)I'm not sure there is significantly more power in it than a good 865. On the other hand I can't say how it performs when it's thrashed. If there's not a noticeable step up in poke though, I'm not sure why Id want to pay out for the new model. Anyone currently running a new 900 engine bike day to day and can tell me how it compares with the 865?
I took the Road Less Travelled.

If Triumph only puts the 900 in the TBA, they will miss the boat. Cruisers need torque, and torque comes with large cc's.

Maybe if they build a Speedmaster, it will be a 1200? But, I still stand by my original statement, that the Bobber is the replacement for the Speedmaster.

Why in the name of Buddha would they use the 900? Surely Triumph would see the benfit of the 1,200cc but what do I know?.I didn't think the Bobber would be a go in it's current form but they reckon it's the most successful model launch in Triumph's history. My 865 is staying put Especially if they only go to 900 in the new one.The 900 engine is supposed to have more torque HP etc,but I don't think it'd be enough to get me to ditch my 865.

Be my guess they'll drag this out to try and run through as much of the Thunderbird inventory as possible.
They'll then release some variant of the 1200 as a cruiser as seen in the spy pics to try and recapture a bit of the cruiser market. It's quite obvious Triumph has moved in a different from where they were 7/8 years ago. I can't say I blame them, they'll never take any real numbers from HD and with Indian back on the scene it's slim pickings in that market. Even the Japanese makers recognize that.

Another prediction on the BA/SM replacement. Since the Bobber is being billed as a "Bonneville Bobber", I think that the America will again be called the "Bonneville America". Just my guess...

Well, In point of fact...I got a call from the dealer telling me my TBA was ready if I could get there in an hour....so I ended up mercilessly ragging my loan bike 900 scrambler to make the shop before it shut. Actually it went very well...so smooth and just as rapid... probably more so but we have a lot of speed cameras on the M25 so 95 was the most I saw on the clock in an hour's ride. It felt pretty unstressed at that speed I have to concede. On the return my TBA felt clunky and vibratory by comparison! So I won't rule out a 900 TBA if the worst happens. I do though feel for the poor s*d who ends up buying the scrambler...no way to run in a new bike.

I've said it a hundred times, a 1000 CC bike is big enough to do practically anything without the weight and problems of the bigger motor. But that's cause I'm old and outdated in my thinking.

I had a 2002 Bonneville America, sold it in march with over 160,000 miles. Never had motor or carbs apart. Did replace stator and spraque clutch a d rectifier. Took it to New York once. 8,000 miles in 6 1/2 weeks.Bought a 2006 America with 5,875 miles on it. Love that 790cc motor with stock carbs.

I said at the beginning I wish Triumph had done 1,000cc when they went from 790cc but then the 1,200cc arrived so ok. I remember when the big Harleys were 1200 and folks were ok with that.I guess we live in a "bigger is better" world but we know that's not necessarily so.I was watching you tube videos of the 650cc Kawasaki vulcan s.Those things are good IMO.

After you saying this Al I'll have to keep an open mind on a 900 too.

It would be very surprising and likely doomed to fail if Triumph put the same engine in an America or Speedmaster that they have in the Street Twin. Some specs below.
I too would like to see an 11 or 1200 cc engine in the new cruiser, however, if they boosted the current HP and torque by ~20% using a variant of the 900 engine, that would not be bad.
Interestingly HP and torque numbers seem to be removed from the Triumph web site and PDF brochures currently.
2017 Street Twin HP: 55.00 HP (40.1 kW)) @ 5900 RPM Torque: 80.00 Nm (8.2 kgf-m or 59.0 ft.lbs) @ 3230 RPM
2013 America HP: 61.00 HP (44.5 kW)) @ 6800 RPM Torque: 72.00 Nm (7.3 kgf-m or 53.1 ft.lbs) @ 3300 RPM

I've ridden most of the new twins, 900's The Scrambler is fun, as is the Street twin. The Street Cup is a failure, no sales.
The (1200's) T120 and Bobber are both very quick. Very nice powerplant, quite top end and nice exhaust note. I would be much interested in a 1200 Cruiser, but not in the Bobber frame as seen in recent spy pics. That just looked like a bunch of left over parts from the 1980's thrown together

If you guys would have read the article where the spy pics were in real carefully you would have picked up that Triumph plans to produce a "line" of cruisers based on the new 900 AND the 1200 engine. The 900 could be the entry model cruiser w 1200 being a different model ala the 883 and 1200 Harley's. Just sayin... One of those models will sure to be introduced in the fall.

Sadly I think the America and Speedmaster names are history. I hope I am wrong. I just hope they don't call one of them the "Street Cruiser" Street Cup, Street Twin, Street triple, Street Scrambler...it's too much.

I have said this before and you are all wrong. The name of the 2 up Bobber will be Bobberett. If you look on the Triumph web page they have made the Bonneville a class of motorcycles instead of a single bike. I have been on the Bobber a couple times and even though it looks small it is a peppy thing. On both the 900 and 1200 the specs do not look great, but they did a good job with the power band in the engines. I also agree with the statement of when is engine size big enough. I would not give up my 2005 America for nothing. I love the bike and I love the 790cc engine and being able to play with it. I did get a Rocket 3 Touring in the spring and I will say it is a much better interstate bike than the America. The America is still more fun to ride.

In 2001 demo a plain bonnie and a law. Wla 650. For a 1,000 more bonnie was 10x the bike. During biketoberfest 2001 demo the america. Bought it in 2002. Would love to demo new Triumphs.Especially the bobber But guess they quit demos at bikeweek.

It appears Triumphs marketing plan, if you can call it that. Is to have dudes in skinny jeans who own cats and have blood on their hands riding into warehouses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS2VZPYhHSY
