hi just got me bike back together ai gone, pod filters in, 125 mains thruxton needles, no shims, 42 pilots, she starts fine had carbs balanced, when i excellerate about 3/4 throttle, it backfires and dies hit kill switch and she starts, but farting and no responce, tried a little choke and she runs a lot better, have both screws about 4 turns out , when she does go , its smooth and no flat spots could it be float levels? or do i need 45 pilots any sggestions ? cheers
lowered 2 in stretched front ,widened front forks, aubergine black pearl paint 40 ford rear light standard exhaust all baffels removed, pods, 155 main, 45 pilot, thruxton needle, 16 tooth sprocket procom ignitor set to no 5

Sounds like your to lean at the top, 3/4 TP is well out of the pilots and into the mains......but this is only my guess there are many more far more versed in Carbs than I...but some of those people are at the GA rally so you may not hear form them for a few days

Kevin, You don't say if your exhaust is modified. That would be helpful to know. If the pod filters are K&N pod filters, then 125 jets are too small by far. Have you tried Dinqua's jetting calculatior? That calculates the K&N pods to use 145 jets with your mods. Also, just by the fact that you say it runs better on the choke tells me you are too lean. It sounds like you have really opened up the air intake, now what about the exhaust? If you open things up going in then you need to open things up going out too. Here's my guess. If you are running K&N Pod Filters and haven't done anything to your pipes, you could run 135 to 145 jets. If your pipes are modified or aftermarket, then you could run 145 to 155 jets. Quite a difference from where you are now. Try 145 jets to start, and consider opening up your pipes. There's lots of discussion around here about that. I wouldn't mess with the floats until you try different jets. That's just my opinion. Every disclaimer you can think of applies here. Hope that helps, Cody

hi cody yes i have opened up stock pipes took two of the 3 baffles out and made five small holes around last sound great i think it is too lean but on occasion when i stop the bike fuel starts running out of left air filter( not knn) and yesterday emtied fuel chamber on both carbs and loads of fuel came out of right carb ,and just a trickle out of left , i think its getting stuck, need to clear this fist , i have thruxton needles as well so may not have togo right up to 145 jets,

You're on the right track. That is definately not an adjustment or jetting issue. You have (at least) a float valve leaking or misadjuxted float, and possibly some restriction in the fuel line. Check the hidden filter if it's still there.
Look in the tech vault forum on this site for various links to help you out.

pulled thecarbs off today lots of red like gel in the bowls, due to painting of the tank i think anyway cleaned all bowls and floats everything looks ok, went for a run , drives well strong , took plugs out greyish bown , not too bad thinking a little lean, will try 145 mains and 45 pilots as i am out 3 1/2 turns and still popping , my filters are 70 mill pods , more or less fully open so with muck in the fuel system and running lean, i think this caused the cutting out at 3 quarter throttle in 3rd,thats clear now so ithink bigger jets are requireed thanks everyone for advice kevin

If I were you I would check the petcock screen and fuel lines also, you could have gummed up paint in the petcock and the petcock screen would that definetly slow down your fuel flow and explain cutout at higher throttle ranges.
Just giving you extra ideas

That's a good bit of information to tuck away. I was a little stumped. I was starting to believe it was a stuck float, but I don't see any reason for a float to stick if it had previously been working well, unless something else has changed. In your case the change was the gunk from the tank. I'm glad you found the problem. Let us know about how the jet changes work out.
