Saw it last night and enjoyed it. I hear there was a little artistic licence with the facts about the Germans but heck its a movie. Loud, but then again I guess bombs are.

I saw it yesterday too.I enjoyed it but I was a little disappointed there was no German or French perspective in it.I thought more could have been made of the rearguard actions fought by the French and British to allow the retreat but maybe it would be too big a subject for what was IMO a shortish movie.I saw it in Thailand and the noise levels used in Thai theatres give shell shock!

It's an interesting period to me.I have a BSA SMLE rifle made in 1940 after Dunkirk and before the Bombing of the BSA factory. They subsequently made "dispersal" rifles making different parts in different factories "dispersed" around the place so the Germans couldn't bomb just one place and stop production.

Good Heavens...you get Foyle' s War over yonder....I'm impressed..... its usually fairly accurate too in terms of the vehicles being mostly correct for period.
But I'm afraid that Honeysuckle is spoken for....married to a Peer of The Realm....

I heard of a vet quoted who was there saying that the volume in the theatre was louder then on the beach.

Same in Thailand when I saw "Blackhawk down" the gunshots sounded like they were going off beside my head!

Not sure there was much rearguard action needed to hold off the Germans. Their ground forces had outrun their supply lines and were bogged down.

The German SS shot a lot of British prisoners from the Norfolk regiment because they held out, and held them up too long. The Coldsteam Guards had a pretty big engagement and a lot of French units fought more tenaciously and bravely than they are given credit for.All this should have been in the movie IMO but as I said it's a big subject for a pretty short movie to cover. This covers the order to halt and the French action too.

Plenty of rearguard heros and they should get some mention.

I didn't mean to disparage the rear guards, but we must remember most of the movie goers today don't have a clue what Dunkirk was. Most schools don't cover history that far back, and many colleges don't have history requirements anymore.

You're correct unfortunately the dumbing down of the worlds population continues at an alarming rate.

Professor Victor Davis Hanson reviews "Dunkirk". Thinks it was a good movie that could have been Great.

Here's the article, it's a good short read about the movie and the importance of the rescue to England and victory in WWII.

The observation of the volume by the really old vet would probably be correct. About 2 minutes into a firefight or artillery situation you can barely hear from the damage to your ears so it would sound much more quiet than the movie.

Trying to shoe horn in some political context or higher ranks devising a master plan, or even a Hitler rant would kill the point. Its a movie not PBS documentary.
Perhaps some context could have been added to the opening scene by depicting what the rear guard was facing, but the movie was about a hellious escape.
The citizen volunteer rescue operation,The reception of the soldiers back home and the Churchill speech at the end leaves you with a clear picture of British tenacity, stiff upper lip, and resolve to get back in the fight.
I'm just glad there wasn't some huge fictional plot, comic book style hero, or romance story slathered all over the theme.

.

The professor over thinks it just a tad. It's a war movie not one of his lectures on military history.

Just watched it tonight. I was dissapointed. It was ok, but pretty slow. I really didn't like the way it was edited, telling 4 or 5 stories, back and forth, and the occasional forward and backward in time. Kinda disjointed when I didn't really think it had to be. It could have used some CGI effects in places. The "flotilla" that came across the water to rescue looked like about 20 boats when in reality there were scores. A few poignent scenes. All in all I would give it a C.

Y'all been lookin at hollywierd too much.
Just because action hero x didn't jump out of a fighter plane that was on fire, and get into a free fall fight with a German and kill him just in time to pull the chute. Then dive down in the water and use his parachute to plug up the torpedo tube so that when it fired it would blow the the u boat. only after sneaking aboard and rescuing the hostages. Don't mean it's not a good movie.

We'll see. Going to see it tomorrow afternoon. It actually got 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course that doesn't mean anything. The CHIPs movie got 17% and I thought it was hilarious. Loved the Ducatis. Obviously no bikers at Rotten Tomatoes.

It's not bad.I was just expecting more from the advertising.I was hoping for a "Longest day" because the subject deserves it IMO.It's the best thing showing ATM at the movies I reckon but it could have been more.

Yeah it was okay but not outstanding. It WAS freakin LOUD. Like you all said. The floor and seats were vibrating. I'd give it 7 on a scale of 1-10.l for the cinematography. I don't know if I would recommend it to friends.
