hey all, question for ya,
when caught in the rain, besides pulling over immediately; how do those of you with your air box removed combat getting carbs full of water that spit and pop until you tear them down?

I got caught in a 1 foot deep Desert Flash Flood/Torrential Rainstorm, and all I did was slow way down. Bike never missed a beat. I would have waited it out, but I knew higher ground was only 4-5 miles away. BTW, I run Pods too, if you're wonderin'..

Like Ryk, I have had zero problems. I have bare K&N pods, was in a rain so hard cars had to pull over. I kept riding in the stuff to just see what this bike would do in a flood rain situation. Water was 6" deep in the road and it never so much as sputtered. But I did.

By pods I assume you mean K&N filters? And if so, do you have prefilters on them? I have that set up and even at low speed I have slop in the bowels.

I must have gotten lucky, because I continued on for another 10,500 miles of my Summer tour without a glitch. Just nekkid DNA pods and my own version of a battery holder. I do run a longer rear tire spray deflector plate or metal curtain with a sheet rubber add on for any swing arm interference, than any other version I have seen. But I have never given it any credit other than it keeps the area where the airbox was, a lot cleaner.

I have K&N pods and have never had an issue, I even rode from here in PA to the northern end of Vermont in driving rain so hard I couldn't see the tail light of the guy in front of me. Bike never miss a beat for me either. Rode in driving rain coming home from Laconia too, all the way.Rode home from Niagara Falls in driving rain too.

well now this is super weird. i have the BC airbox removal kit in both my TBA and my T-100 and both take on water like the titanic. and that is with covers on both. i am at a loss here. mind you, i am not crawling in the rain; but also not going at normal highway speed.

I ride as hard and fast as visibility allows in the rain, I don't remember what the BC kit looks like, I have the Freak kit. No covers on my pods, just the pods. Is there maybe something in the BC kit that directs water where you don't want it? This is not a Freak ad as most of you that have been here as long or longer than I know I can't stand Brent and have stated how bad his cutomer service has been, I would never buy from New Speedmaster or New Bonneville.

IDK, but after reading that so many aren't having the issue, i am worried that i am getting water in from somewhere other than the filters?!?!?!

Dunno man, it may be the position of your knees maybe funneling water right onto the pods. Strange. If you were here we could set up a lab test with a hose and replicate rain. That would be fun and then you could get all dry and have some nice warm high fiber muffins.

I do tend to man-spread, especially on the t-100. And I'm a big cheese fan, so there is that. I'm wondering if something like this would work

Are you really getting water in the carbs ? It is possible for heavy rain the block the fuel vent line, if that happens the bike will run for crap (like a carb problem) and by the time you tear into the carbs the problem will literally evaporate. Just asking, because water in small amounts (rain/mist) will actually run better.

def water in the carbs, and a lot of it. this is the third time it has happened. i am starting to put a lot of stock in Wade's theory...God help me
seriously though, you guys who don't have the issue, do you ride with your legs tight in to the bike?

Well, like Micah said, water in small amounts will sometimes make an engine run a bit better and loosen carbon. I'm not so sure THAT much water is getting in the filter media, and even then, it's on the air side of the carbs.

You are finding water exactly where in the Carbs, the float bowl?

Time for a in line sediment bulb? They will segregate water from Gas, at least they did pre-ethanol.

He was kinda vague about exactly where he's finding the water, so I had to ask. I mean there is the vacuum chamber, the throat and butterfly, the anti backfire valve thingie and the float bowl. For a better list talk to Ken.

yes, in the bowls, and also in the rubber flange of the filters. it is mostly always on the throttle side of the bike (on both the TBA and the T-100) practically nothing on the other filter / carb.

fuel vent is the hose that needs to be cut at and angle, correct?

i'm not that up on the carb bits; but i have found water in the bowls, HOWEVER it is backfiring.

Methinks the water isn't getting in through the filters so much then. The vent hose may be picking up water, find the end and razor knife it at a 45 degree or greater angle or you bought some crappy gas (it happens), would be where I would be looking into. Maybe even the tank cap, is it stock or aftermarket vented?

stock cap on the t-100 and an aftermarket on the TBA. i found the hose that hangs down right before the swing arm, cut that at an angle years ago. so i'm still scratching my head. not to mention it is always the throttle side of the bike that gets hit the worst???
if i can't get this fixed, effectivly i can't take either bike on long hauls.

Drain your gas into a container where you can get a good look at it, if there"s water present, you'll see it. If it looks good pour it back in or in your lawnmower. Maybe try this? It's way better than that HEET stuff: web page I put it in everything that runs on Gas I own, every Spring.

I have the FREAK Kit as well and have never had a problem in the rain. And I have ridden in some major downpours. No prefilter sock or anything other than the stock cheese graters.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

There is usually an underlying reason that these kind of problems come on. Never did it before, now it does, phenomenon. Such as what failure of a regular routine of a healthy motor would/could cause or leak of a vacuum source that draws water in now. Or even has increased the vacuum past specs. B171doc comes to mind, the deeper he dug, the more problems he found. A faulty part can cause premature failures in all directions of a machine. Seen it, lived it, got stuck fixing it.

here is the update folks!!! the first issue was the upgraded manifolds i bought from now closed triumphperformanceusa.com, on both bike, the cheap rubber boots had split and probably sucked in water. really sad that they got away with ripping people off; but i had contacted them about new boots and Carlos Schmidt swore up and down i would get thicker new boots, never got them, and of the rest is history. the bad this is, the improved vortex really does increase preformance; but obviously the rubber is crap. the second issue was relegated strictly to the t-100. the bike was bought used, and maybe lived outside a good bit, anyway, it had rust in the tank, as in the gas was orange and thick, and the main petcock filter was GONE as in missing and the reserve screen was 80% clogged. so that accounts for the slop in my bowels. thanks for all the input gents, lets hope this issue is put to bed...anyone know where i can get custom manifold boots made?

Generic Radiator Hose? I would call Summit Racing on the phone and explain your dilemma to the tech. A dial caliper on hand would be helpful in describing the exact sizes/dimensions required. Their customer service is some of the best I've experienced.

You should be able to source replacement manifold boots from British Customs. Those 2 bolt rubber boots should be a common size. IIRC, BC sold the same basic manifolds as TPUSA did.

Don't forget that there are 2 vent lines to consider. One for the tank and one that vents the float bowls. Both will cause problems.
I know that the tank vent will cause the engine to sputter and possibly quit if it is in direct line with any water being sprayed from the front tire. If this happens, crack the gas cap to see if things come back to life.
The float bowl vent is probably the one causing the water problems. It needs to be located in an area that doesn't see high or low pressure otherwise you could push water into the bowls giving you your problem, or create a vacuum in the bowls giving you drive ability problems at speed (ask me how I know). I've often toyed with the thought of placing a foam filter over these vent lines to see if it would help prevent these problems.
