Somebody guessed that the ecu might get its speed info from a hall effect trigger on the front sprocket.
I'm not sure though why they'd do that in preference to counting gearbox output shaft revs and comparing these with a time measurement.
It seems impossible to get any real information about this.
I might try getting hold of a factory manual .
