I didn't have to cut anything for the rec/reg replacement. I did pull the bolts for the battery bracket to wiggle it up & out of the way for the plug to pass.

And I also visited HF when I did my rear brakes last. Picked up a hand operated vacuum pump thingy that worked well for the rear brake fluid.

edit: now I'm not so sure it was the battery bracket I loosened but I did loosen something that made getting the rec/reg plug into place much easier.
