Perhaps I'm a minority here but I don't mind them too much.
For me, getting out of the London area is best done on motorways.....you can get out fast then concentrate on the better roads...next Friday I go to Devon with a couple of TBA friends.....out along the M 25( busiest road in Europe) then the M3 then hit the A303.....where it gets interesting...ride past Stonehenge... down to two lanes mostly and stunning views and history... including a ride by Cadbury Castle- best candidate for Camelot.... this ride used to be much more of a pain when,in the seventies, I had to work my way through South London.
So motorways allow me to get to good places with less stress.
