The cost factor came in with people in the used market. I have not shopped for a bike in a long time but used HD used to cost in the thousands while you could pick up a Honda for a couple hundred and have a far superior motorcycle. Could pick up a Triumph, BSA, or Norton for a few hundred too, that's how I got my collection.I could never amass so many bikes at todays prices.
