I've been using WD40 for years and never knew it stood for War Dept.You learn something everyday.
Old sump oil works we; too.I remember my Dad painted used sump oil over my bike when the 1974 Brisbane floods happened in Australia.The bike was rust free at the end of them

You are correct. Wd-40 is also more of a cleaner than it is a lubricant. If you're trying to lube that side stand switch you need to use some type of grease as WD-40 will just wear/wash away.
