I read that the company that owns Checker (yeah, the taxicab company) plans to re-introduce a 6 door car and a pickup truck. Using the same basic molds from before with updated safety features. GM powered. Should be interesting. I always liked the look.

Could this be your new El Camino Dwight?

https://www.hemmings.com/blog/index.php/...018/?refer=news

Gotta say here Steve, that link to that Checker "El Camino" looked like something one might find in that farcical "news" website "The Onion" or maybe even right out of one of those old Mad magazine articles about "future products", doesn't it?!

Seems you remember how much I loved my old '69 El Camino, eh?! And so, along those lines, and while that Checker thing didn't do a thing for me, there was always a vehicle like this, an updated version of 'em anyway, that I always thought would be kind'a cool to have....and one which I'm sure Paul down under there would be very familiar with...

The General Motors owned Holden company's Ute here...

And of course while it isn't what Rich has been talking about here..a decently priced and decently sized work truck..I remember just before GM dropped the Pontiac brand, there was talk about bringing this Holden Ute over to the states and re-badging and selling this sleek rear-wheel drive baby as a Pontiac.

(...and I thought that that was a cool idea)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yep very popular here Dwight.GM pulled the plug on Holden and Ford have done the same in Australia so neither of them are produced here anymore.

"Holden" Rodeo 4 wheel drives are actually Isuzus made in Thailand and re-badged.I'm not sure if the engine is or not but that's globalization for ya.

I love that checker in the link! I wouldn't buy one to use as a truck though.

Yeah yeah, whatever OB!

STILL say my 2000 Chevy Silverado crew cab looks A HELL of a lot better than any of these ugly freakin' boxy lookin' pickups they make today, dude!!!

(...a purely subjective opinion, of course)

And I'd agree on the looks I'd love to have an old F-100 short bed. But it couldn't do half of what I need my truck to do.

I liked the US pickups from the 50s-60s? Clint Eastwood drove one in the old movie "every which way but loose" Of course they're long gone now except as collectors. .Perfect funnction and form IMO.

He drove a 1971 (IIRC) F-100 in Gran Torino as well. For his daily driver.

Remember the indestructible 1968 Ford pickup truck in the Charles Bronson movie Mr Majestyk? It was filmed with a stock truck that was so tough Ford Motor Co used the chase scenes in a commercial after the movie came out in '74.

That kind of prominent product placement in cool movies would be good for Triumph to go after again. Look at how beneficial the Steve McQueen connection was.

Triumph wouldn't know how to market fresh hamburger in a shark tank.

That checker "ElCamino" is sweet. Reminds me of the Dodge rampage, which a friend of mine had. And I HAD a 69 ElCamino also, Dwight. MINE was probably YOUR old one after you wore it out and you traded it in for that Maserati! But, what ever happened to Chevy bringing back the ElCamino? I thought I'd read that they were definately gonna do that to fill in the spot the S10 left?

Another movie with an indestructible car was Bullit, that movie was filmed with only 1 Mustang.

Ever seen the build sheet on that 'Stang? Not exactly right off the showroom floor. Then again, look at the car it had to keep up with.

Hadn't heard anything about a revival of the El Camino other than that shelved Pontiac plan I mentioned earlier, Rich. With Chevy's fairly recent debut of their mid-sized Colorado, that would've probably put to rest any thoughts of such a thing, I would think.

(oh, and btw...to my regret, yes I DID sell my beloved '69 El Camino about 10 years ago, but it was to purchase the used 2000 Silverado I mentioned earlier...not the "Maserati", which I'm sure you know is really the Porsche 550 Spyder Beck replica)

That's what I like about you, Dwight, your humble, common man taste in automobiles.

Well, ya know what they say, doncha Rich?...

"The only taste some people have is all in their mouth."

(...and I prefer to think that THAT old saw will never be accurately ascribed to Yours Truly here!)
