Quote: Pontiac had the 389 Tripower. Ford was 3 francises For , Lincoln, Mercury.
Yes, when we were dating my wife owned 1969 Mercury Cyclone GT 351 4-bbl 4-speed white with red interior. She sold it to buy her new 1984 Mercury Capri RS 5.0L 5-speed.
But by the end of the 1990s Mercury had been starved of product development because Ford was wasting resources on their foreign Premier Auto Group (Jaguar, Aston Martin, Rover and Volvo) that cost too much to buy and renovate and never made a return on the investment. Meanwhile Mercury and Lincoln got the leftovers and Mercury existed simply as a volume brand to keep Lincoln dealers open. Dumb ass Jacques Nasser lost billions on those foreign brands, money that should have gone back to Ford, Lincoln and Mercury thankfully Alan Mulally took over just in time to save the company.
Edit: Midline car companies like Mercury and Buick don't really make as much sense as they used to because the standard Ford or Chevrolet can be loaded with luxury options or a top of the line model with premium trim that approaches the level of Lincoln or Cadillac. So there's no gap for a midline car to fill anymore. Hell, I never thought I'd see the kind of luxury equipment on a pickup truck that an F150 Limited has, then again I never thought I'd see a $60,000 pickup truck either.
