You might want to try the Triumph Twin Power "Breath" bellmouth before you cut up your air box. Opening the bottom has caused water ingestion problems with some riders in heavy rain.
I ran with the cut out airbox (Polaris bell mouth top and bottom) for several year, thru all sorts of weather and massive heavy rains. No issues with water getting in.
Unless you are fording streams this is the cheapest most effective mod you can do.
