HI. I recently purchased my 1st Triumph and am new to your forum which I enjoy visiting. My bike is a 2009 EFI America that has an air injector removal kit and the long TOR mufflers installed. Bike runs great and for me it's about perfect except for the exhaust noise. All my bikes in the past have been stock and quieter and thats what I'm used to. Does anyone know if the EFI settings would have to be changed on the bike if I put stock mufflers back on? If so is that something only a dealer can do? Thanks for your input, Steve.

Yes, you'd probably need a remap of the ecu. There will be no shortage of folks prepared to swap your aftermarket exhaust system for standard ( including me...but I'm in the UK and I'd guess you're in the States Oh and welcome......bear with us here... we're all mad, but fortunately in different ways. Thanks for your reply. You are correct; I live in the states near Boston, Massachusetts. Former bikes include BMW's and Goldwings so I'm really used to a quiet machine. So, what model of Triumph are you riding?

I have a 2009 Speedmaster and it sounded like a sewing machine with the stock mufflers. I took out the cats and then drilled a 3/4" hole through the 4 remaining chambers/ walls after i'd removed the last baffle and put a 1-1/2" stainless tube into a plate that i welded to the inside of the muffler. It's quite a bit louder than stock but it has a deep rumble sound that "barks" when you open it up. It also "woke " the bike up quite a bit. Had lots of compliments about the sound. i guess i should post its "bark" on you tube.

I have a 2005 America with Carbs, but I also have a Haynes Manual. Since I am a tech I have a tendency to read it. The manual does not specifically address changing the exhaust, but is does say that as long as the Sensor Array is in tact. Especially the Oxygen Sensors, the ECU should adjust itself. You should be good. Damn I got to say Sensor Array.

After i changed the mufflers and took the snorkel out of the air box i also changed to a better tune in the ecu that richened it up a bit the tune was one level above stock. my pipes have never blued and have a very slight gold coloring on the bend at the head. Air injection is removed too.

First time I ever remember reading a post on here about making an America quieter. But each to their own, and welcome to the site!

No, I can understand this....I've run a number of /6 BMW's and it'd seem like sacrilege to mess with the exhaust sound on these. Again I've also run Guzzi California's and never felt the need to change from standard exhausts.... For me though the TBA does cry out to be freed up a little....though on my trip to France Belgium and Holland last week I was happy to be running as standard once the bike was opened up on the motorways.....

I considered going back to stock pipes as they are in great shape but don't know if i could take listening to the "sewing machine" again. The cam chains in these machines is pretty noisy for an old small block Chevy guy like me. But yep, I'd have to dial in the carbs again and it's running so sweet, I'd hate to mess with it.

My apologies for not thanking you guys for your feedback sooner. I just haven't been back to the forum. If I find a good used set of stock tapered mufflers I'll let you know how the project worked out.

Hi Steve....might be worth asking a dealer....some folks don't want to take the stock silencers home with them after a remap.

Just an update. I installed a set of stock mufflers and am enjoying the quiet. The sound kind of reminds me of a stock /5 BMW. My bike has had the air injection removed and is running a KN air filter. Its running very well and the color of the plugs are fine so I haven't had it remapped. Performance and fuel economy seem to be the same. If anything changes I'll post it.
