My friend Treas apparently swears he saw 115 on the clock of his VTX1800 when following me a week back.
Given that my 014 TBA LT has a speed limiter this must be wrong...but I'll revel in the glory all the same

It'd have to have been downhill, off the edge of a cliff with the wind behind me....
I suspect...a) he was accelerating to play catch up and b) maybe Japanese miles per hour are smaller than UK ones.

The speed limiter (unless you have a gvt mandated one as well) just keeps you from over revving the engine. Don't know about the newer ones, but my '03 is geared to hit the rev limit in top gear at about 120 mph.

I'm not so sure of that..seems to rev without apparent limit in other gears but stops at 100 in top.
So I think it might be a limiter driven via the gearbox speedo sensor.
Anyone know for sure about this?

This is exactly what I am seeing on my 13 TBA. Will rev to the limit through 4th but will not let you exceed 97-98 mph in 5th even though it is under 6k rpm.

Yes..that's about it.
I've checked with the Triumph dealer and their remaps dont allow this to be switched off.

But a performance specialist in uk ( BSD) claims experience with this on TBA's and says they can switch it off when they do the work I want them to do.
I have a friend in northern Scotland who's an ex motorcycle cop...he can't understand why I want to switch this off...," How often are you going to need this speed".
A..in northern Scotland no...the roads won't allow it but B...I refuse to have a s****ng computer tell me how fast I'm allowed to go.

Triumph can't (or will not) disable the limiter. But there is a modified 20516 map without the speed limiter available. You would need to use the TuneECU program and a specific USB to OBDII cable to load it. The program can be a good tool to have even if you don't need or want to replace a fuel map/tune in the ECU.

edit: for the later models without the mechanical drive speedo there is a speedometer correction factor that can be adjusted for a more accurate speedo

I used a small battery powered hand held GPS that I use as an emergency backup on the boat to verify that when my '11 TBA topped out at about 100 on the speedometer it was actually only running 95 miles per hour according to the GPS. And it took a long run to get to that speed. You could download an app for your smart phone and do the same thing but your phone is connected to the internet and it might report you.

A chassis dynamometer that calibrates speedometers is no good because of course there is no wind or front tire rolling resistance.

Oh yea, speaking of turning off your machine's top speed limiter google the kid who was tuning his V6 Mustang and turned his off. Ford sets the V6 cars limit at 115 mph but the V8 models are unlimited. People used to think it was only because of the tire's speed ratings but they found out the hard way the driveshafts on the V6 cars were different (remember the driveshaft is turning about 3 times faster than the tires). Well our young hot rodder experienced driveshaft failure at 135 MPH and here's the video. Have to admit V6 Mustang/Camaro/Challengers run pretty good these days, my wife's daily driver is a 2014 Mustang V6 convertible with 305 HP and 31 miles per gallon it's a great combination.
BANG VIDEO

Note that car was an automatic transmission and it upshifted at over 100 MPH.
By the way the aftermarket quickly came up with an upgraded driveshaft and with it the stock 2011-2014 Mustang V6 will top out over 140MPH which is pretty illegal.

Slight correction. Any Mustang built in the last 10 years (maybe longer) have speed limiters. My Wife's '05 GT is limited to 140. Even the Shelby Mustang GT500's are limited from the factory, I think theirs is 155mph.
At those speeds all it would take is a slight bump to let enough air under the front end to lose traction.

The world has gone crazy,135 in a v6 mustang,230 in the new Bugatti. Our Triumphs are a bit softly sprung for high speed running,at least my 03 is, maybe the newer models are a bit stiffer but 95mph is about all mine is comfortable doing.

Look...95 is fine...it's just that I won't be told by a computer how fast I can go....
Seriously, does anyone know why they put a limiter on it?
It's not as if the motor can't take a higher speed...so why?

Smaller rubble field? But seriously, just how long can you tolerate your legs and feet out in front of you at 100MPH? That's the main reason I slow back down a little, while riding through the Desert on those long straight, flat, and smooth stretches.

Please believe me...OK Im 63 but I ride 15000 miles a year and
Am perfectly capable of 500 miles at high speed.
I put it down to a heathy lifestyle and diet...I never drink before I wake up in the morning and eat only those creatures which I know to have suffered before they hit my plate.
I recommend this lifestyle to you all.

Oh I forgot to say...I'm 6 ft 3 and most forward controls don't stick my feet out front..in fact they just make for a comfortable mid mount ride.

Exactly. If you really want to run over 100 MPH for an extended time why buy a forward control cruiser, seems like a Speed Triple would be a better choice.

With all the bike choices available it may be best to buy the bike that fits your needs, rather then push your existing bike past it's design limits. I hate to admit it but the factory really knows best.

Getting over 100 out of a TBA is hardly pushing it past its design limits....It irks me that the performance of the older models exceeds the new machines ability
That's just so wrong...in my own view.

They may have over geared it to make a top gear limit. I once had a friend who owned a flathead Ford. He found a rear axle in a junk yard with a Halibrand quick change installed. The staff had no clue and let him have it for the price of a standard axle. He started shuffling gears with the goal of making his car go 90 in first gear. He actually managed 93, but it took a long time to get there. Second was good for 118, but top gear was so far beyond the power curve that it would slow to around 86 MPH.

I now know it's a gearbox signal to the ecu.....and who can remap this......yippee..that is, when I've got enough saved for all the other stuff that needs doing at the same time.
