I've been using a SignalMinder for over ten years. It is a nifty little replacement for the turn signal flasher unit that turns the flashers off after a selectible number of flashes. I also use the connection that stops the countdown while the brakes are applied. It also has a number of other functions that I do not use. I've never had one last more than 16 months, long enough that the warranty has expired.
I think I've found the problem. The flasher unit on our bikes is just above the engine and my last unit would work while it was cold and fail once it got hot. I just replaced the unit (from Fast Eddy of course) but this time I spliced in wires and moved the unit to a spot under the seat. For now it works great, I'll let everyone know how that works in the long run.
Oh by the way, if you ever need to solder wires in close quarters the trick I use is to put some shrink tubing a few inches way from the joint and use a cigar lighter to heat the wiring joint prior to applying the solder to the joint. Then I slide the shrink tubing over the joint and shrink it with a heat gun. I get a very secure and well insulated joint and avoid burning the adjacent wires.
