Shaun, I couldn't help thinking of the last time Lynn and I boarded up for a hurricane. You were here and did the classic
leaning in the wind thing. This hurricane, it was the West wind that blew stuff away. Our home suffered little damage, some soffit pieces blew out and two fence panels blew over. Remarkably enough, none of our pool cage was damaged. And the solar roof panels are in place and working. Our property in Cape Canaveral lost about 9 square of rolled roofing. At 11pm Thursday October 6, the new forecast track shifted Matthew's predicted course 20 miles East. That 20 miles saved the whole region. I lived in Miami Shores when Andrew hit back in 1992. Was in the keys at the time on holiday and had to evacuate. We evacuated to Merritt Island. Took us 14 hours. Went back to my Miami Shores home after stocking up on supplies. Was without power for two weeks. Miami was not Homestead. And Homestead was what Matthew had in store for us this past Friday. I've yet to talk to a neighbor that holds a different opinion. We dodged a big one. Big Time.
We had power until 6:15 Friday morning. Power was restored at 3:15 pm the same day. Water service was not interrupted. And we lost no perishable food. Made two pots of java Friday and had one egg on the stove when we lost power. The night before I steamed two pounds of wild caught shrimp and cooked a wild caught salmon filet. Had the parents staying with me (and their dog 'sammy', jeez do I miss having a dog), Thursday night and until Friday afternoon. The shrimp was munched on by Mom and Dad and the remainder was refrigerated as was the salmon, for the cooler should Mathew disrupt our power for an extended period. pre-cooked food is the 'bees wax' when power is lost.
So Shaun, you see that with every hurricane Lynn and I are thinking of you, out in the middle of the street, acting like a big kid!!!! Always brings a smile to us. Nice frame of reference eh? !
