Competition improves the breed, Without Indian and Victory in the marketplace nothing would have changed. But the question remains, how much is too much? How big and powerfull do bikes need to be?

Agreed on the competition. Victory and Indian will make HD work hard to stay level.

I don't think you can make an air-cooled engine too much bigger without it becoming a heat monster. My guess is we'll start to see liquid-cooled bikes before too long. I'm waiting on a liquid-cooled Indian 4.

Speedmaster05, No doubt you are correct. As long as they keep the look as nice as the new Triumph motors no one will mind at all. I recently rode a newer Twin Cam bagger and was shocked at how refined it was, still to heavy for my taste but wow was it smooth.

The HD ultra line has been liquid cooled for a couple of years.

HD engines are already heat monsters. Lots of threads on HD forums re: people literally burning their legs from the engine heat. I had to put heat deflectors on my 96ci and I read that the 103's are pretty toasty.

Harley's are weighing in at 800lbs and up; how much more weight can people enjoyably handle? My Super Glide was one of the lightest "big" twins at about 680 curb weight. That's a lotta weight to maneuver through gravel parking lots, etc. Bigger is better? Depends...

I rented an Ultra Glide and coming back from AZ in NV over the Hoover dam (maybe 2009 so just before they finished the bypass bridge ) in stationary traffic, that thing near enough cooked my legs.
Loaded with luggage and a pillion it was impossible to do anything other than sit there and cook
It was like an oven anyway going over the dam and it was over 100 degrees back out on the road so there was virtually no relief from the heat of the bike even then.

On the subject of size and weight, Harley's are among the smallest and lightest "big" bikes on the market. Much like late model pick up trucks bikes just keep getting bigger all the time,at least this reaction to the market has created a resurgence in the Mid size bikes now comming into the showrooms. Indian Scout, Victory Octane, Ducati Scrambler and the 700/900 Yami's. Triumph needs to get the 1200 into the America soon before the train leaves the station.

Amen to that funkletrumpet! An outfit called Captain Itch makes a leather heat deflector that some say helps Harley-burn... The aftermarket heat deflectors on my glide seemed to do okay, but I never sat in triple digit temps at a long traffic light or construction.

100 degree Arizona heat on a full fairing touring bike would be hot no doubt but the fairing and lowers would be welcome most seasons in other parts of the country like Milwaukee for example. You would have had a cooler ride if you'd have rented a Road King.

And a lot of the excess heat these days is because of catalytic converters.

Hey, at least it was a memorable ride!

There's nothing quite like watching a Hoover Dam sunset from the AZ side...

all bigger more powerful engines produce more heat regardless of cooling used. lots of improvements but some bugs as is typical of new designs especially true for HD as they are cheap using lots of cheaper outsourced parts, time will tell!!

A big air cooled twin is quite nice for winter riding.

Revival of the Indian 4 would be great, but where would you get a Ford V8-60 to make it go fast?

It always cracked me up to see those old 1200cc more or less 4 cyl. bikes and see they are rated at like 5hp.

Well Dog, The Bulldozer that graded my yard had 40hp, sure pushed a big pile of dirt. Moral of the story is, You race with hp you ride on TORQUE, those old big 4's had plenty of torque but did not spin fast enough to generate good hp numbers.

How big is too big? Well it looks like the new Rocket will be 2500cc and 170 hp out the door.

I am loving my new 2015 R3T and yes it is a big bike, but on the interstate it is a dream. I took her to a Triumph rally in southern Indiana and had no issues keeping up in the curves.

I was at a dead stop and dropped her Saturday leaving a parking lot(first time, no damage). Wife was not too happy with me. I could not believe it took her so long to fall such a short distance.

I rode the America all day yesterday and omg do I love her. She is so lite and nimble.

It is kinda like lifting 50 pound bags and then lifting 10 pound bags.

I could not imagine only having a big bike. If I had to choose just one bike the Rocket would go.

I had an R3 for over 5 yrs.
Loved it but tyres were a pita. I was changing them ever 3,000-3,500 miles and at about £450 (currently about $540) a time, it was a nuisance.
I must admit I've been looking at them again recently but if there is a 2.5 coming out, I'll wait and see that.
I've got a 2016 Guzzi V9 right now and after the Road King, this thing feels like a little scooter!!

I agree, going from my t-bird back to the speedmaster is amazing (and fun).

if you do some reading you will see they are having issues, as expected!! for the most part they are being addressed but the latest where lubricant from the tranny moves into the primary is still in limbo. not all have issues but prolly poor outsourced parts that many manufacturers use. engine design is surely better than their last one but still leaves something to be desired!! for that kind of $$$$ i would expect better but, the cool-aiders are buying them along with extended warranties but at slower rates than expected!!!

I have ridden those old inline 4 bikes and not much TQ there either for the size. I have a good friend who rides an Indian 4. Many of my friends ride old bikes, one rides a 20s HD with exposed rockers, another a 36 Knuckle, another a 50 pan EL, another has 2 Indians a Scout and a Chief both completely stock and original paint (the Scout is original rust can't see much paint anymore) another a 58 Triumph 500 with a 750 top end and crank and rods, another a 72 Bonnie that Paul Sr. owns now etc... Some great bikes.

I wonder if the new Harley engine is a smooth as they say.

It's counterbalanced and rubber mounted but they intentionally left in a little low frequency vibration so you know you're riding a motorcycle not a Gold Wing.
