Any time I ever got a job I had to give a social security # so they would know who to tax, so yes it is an employers obligation to know who works for them and if they're legal or not. I have to carry my "papers" all the time, in the form of a licence or other ID and have to show on request to many different people, including employers and i was born and raised in the good ol USA.
