Hi guys...as I was covering my bike just now, I noticed a large patch of rust on the underside of my British custom muffler left side...is there anything I can do about this? Pretty disappointed right now honestly....

Most likely from the salt. Steel wool with oil will get it off, but rust means oxidation has occurred beyond the chrome. Keep it dry and oiled . No sure cure.

Never rub Stainless or Chrome with carbon steel anything (carbon steel brush, even sandpaper or grinding wheels after using on steel), the chromium picks up carbon molecules and will begin to rust. Don't believe it? Lay a piece of mild steel and stainless outside for a month in contact with each other, you will find rust developing at the point of contact and the stainless will continue to rust there even after separation. Wade is right, polish off the rust and keep it protected from the air. You can slow it way down, but the rust will win in the end eventually.

Phosphoric acid in the Coke eats up the iron oxide. And we drink the stuff !

I always thought that chromium was harder than steel, maybe so. The deposition of iron particulate on chrome is interesting, thanks Ryk *

I've always used aluminum foil and water. It leaves some residue, but is easily cleaned up with a shop towel. Been using it for years and makes the chrome/stainless look like new!

I thought all the BC brand mufflers were stainless. The only thing about stainless pipes is that over time they get a golden tint, easily buffed off with polish.

Carbide Precipitation, common to the lower grades of 300 series Stainless, from exposure to heat. For a few measly dollars more, the exhaust manufacturers could use ELC (extra low carbon) Stainless, and you'd wonder where the Yellow went. Still beats Chrome plated Steel in every way. The insides of Steel exhaust systems absorb Carbon from exhaust gases until it becomes something known to some as "no longer Steel". Same thing that transpires inside Gas and Coal fired Boilers, which I have dealt with up close and personally.

Be careful how much oxygen you allow in contact with it as well. It is called "Oxidation" after all.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
