I bought a really small rucksack for that purpose...
I can fit my diary, phones (ones a work one...) keys, wallet, a book to read while at work and not much else. Unless I buy small stuff, I can't fit anything else in there.

I do have panniers (saddlebags) but I only put them on when away for a couple of days. The rest of the time there safety kept in a cupboard...
