When I changed my chain at around 38,000 kilometers I didn't replace the rear sprocket. When I sold the bike at 57k it still had the original rear sprocket. Looked like new. I only used chain wax. Doesn't do anything to the internals of an x ring chain but it does help lube the sprockets. If I was riding on dirt roads though, I'd use nothing on the chain.
