They used to be self regulated Larry. 50,000 dead people per year. Now 40% less because the cars are built better and protect the passengers. ABS, Air Bags, Glass standards, anti-intrusion bars, on and on. NHTSA regulation and reporting drove that. 90 million more cars in the last 30 years while deaths continue to drop.

IMHO I will keep NHTSA around. Like Jon Oliver says about other things. Car companies self regulating is like have a dingo babysit the kids.

So we should just accept the Imperial Bureaucracy because they are so much smarter and better than we mere mortals? Autocratic and unaccountable government employees punishing companies because they don't jump high enough when the bureacrat says jump. Coming soon to a company near you! They have all the money in the world, that they can take from you, to pursue you until they break you. Yeah, that sounds great.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
