OK, I need to replace the front rotor on my 2007 TBA.
I saw a thread about doing it here somewhere and noted the comments about the blue loctite on the disk bolts. My plan is to buy & use a simple propane torch to help melt the loctite, to make it easier to remove. However, will this darken or affect the appearance of the bolts at all ?
Also, with the new rotor installed, will it be necessary to re-balance the front wheel ?
I'm also looking for options for the rotor disk. I know I can get it from my dealer, but wondering what other options there are out there ?
What's the part number for the rotor disk ? I'm thinking maybe I can find one, via eBay, and avoid (hopefully) paying tax.
I've got the Haynes Manual as a guide, but I don't have the Triumph service manual chapter. If anyone can email that to me, I'd be much obliged.

Torch is overkill for that job...an inexpensive heat gun from HF will do.

I have done a few and have not needed any heat. I used a good fitting bit and hit that a couple times sharply with a hammer then threaded the screws out with no issue.

I didn't need heat to remove the front rotor on my bike. Just a little elbow grease.

Don't use a rounded allen, as mentioned, taking a socket drive allen and giving each fastener a light rap with a hammer is a good move, the allen will go a few thou deeper in and the blue lock-tite will loosen up. The heat gun is helpful too.

Elbow grease, good fitting allen socket (not rounded on bit), good rap or two with a hammer preferably with the socket fitted to the bolt and they will come off. They do make impact drivers to remove these kind of bolts. THIS VIDEO shows a typical one at work.

Thanks all for the advice, especially the heat gun and allen sockets. I was a little apprehensive about that propane flame.
I'm also going to look into the impact driver. For some reason, I thought it was a more involved device, using high pressure air or hydraulics (clearly I was thinking of something else). I might have one in my stash of tools I got from my Dad. If not, well hello Harbour Freight !
I still need to find the Triumph part number for the rotor disk. Can I re-use the bolts or do they need to be replaced as well ?
The floating disk option is tempting, but the price is more than I want to invest in at this time.

I have previously reused rotor bolts on dual-disk brakes. On a single disk brake that rotor is absorbing a lot of energy; I would suggest replacing them...that does not mean that they can't be reused - they can - the question is do you want to...do you feel lucky today...well do ya...

What am I ? Funny, like a clown ?
Good point, thanks. Even at Tacoma Screw, they will be way cheaper than what I expect to pay for the actual rotor.

PS: I did find an old impact wrench in my Dad's tool box. I thought he had one.

I re-use mine too, no issues either. But I'm careful to not over torque/stretch them. When bolts are over tightened and have exceeded their modulus of elasticity, get new ones.

I also reused them , only ones I didn't were ones that I didn't like the hole the allen fits into.

Hmmmm, EBC Pro-Lite Front Brake Rotor for 2007 America: $135.02 http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/11089/i/ebc-pro-lite-front-brake-rotorI didn't see anything on NewBonneville or J&P. eBay had some for about $200 including shipping from the UK. Any other suggestions for places to look on line? Steve

And on eBay EBC front Brake Rotor for $124.03 w/free shipping http://www.ebay.com/itm/EBC-Front-Brake-...d4d&vxp=mtrI'm also seeing Kevlar brake pads listed on eBay. Does anyone have any thoughts on these especially versus the sintered metal pads ? I had the sintered metal pads, but I suspect they affected the rotor disk lifetime. Steve

I use cheap organic brake pads, they wear faster but they are cheap and save the rotor.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. Those sintered metal pads seem to do a number on the (stock) rotor. How often are you replacing the organic pads ? I know it depends on several things, but I'm just looking for some rough benchmarks to go by.

I've tried them. They are better on the rotor, but was not a life changing difference. Just make sure they are not from Chairman Mao and the People's Repugnant. They make pads out of drywall mud and irradiated peanut butter .

Your brake pads and rotors last longer and your brakes work better, if you jack up one end of the bike at a time, hand spin the wheel and run a mechanics stone over the working portion of the rotors. My rotors have many miles on them, no lip on the perimeter, and they are almost as smooth as new. Ian gets incredible miles on a chain/sprocket set, I do the same with pads and rotors. BTW, since I quit oiling my chain, it's wearing much slower too, thanks, Ian.

Welcome, I know, counter intuitive but true. I never tried the mechanics stone, I scuff mine with a fiber surface prep pad on an angle die grinder every other set of pads or so.

OK thanks Ryk. How often do you do this ? Are there different grades of mechanic's stone ? I also stopped oiling my chain. I use that dry wax spray that Rocket Bob (well he had a Rocket, he's now got a Bonny T100 I believe) suggested
And thanks Wade for the info on the Kevlar pads. I'm not keen on using the sintered metal pads again.

I use a 1/2 x 1-1/4 x 4" combo whetstone with a medium coarse on one side and a fine or finish grit on the other, along with a spray bottle of water. I start with the coarse side, spin the wheel as fast as possible and still be finger safe and accurate where I have the stone. When I feel no hesitation or rough spots as shes going around, I switch to the fine side, rinse and repeat. Two times over the Summer, starting with the rotors fresh is plenty. You are only removing less than one ten thousandth of metal and all of the glaze in the process. Starting with a new rotor is the way to go, once they get seriously grooved, it's a lathe job or get a new one. Hardwickes Hardware at 42nd NE and Roosevelt Way in the U District is great place (all the flavors) to buy mechanic/machinists stones, along with any other tool you might fancy. It's absolutely the best tool store, I have ever been in. I should have mentioned, flush your brake pads with Brakeclean or a garden hose, before you ride and hit the brakes.

Do I use Red or Blue Loctite ?
I'm asking this only because I see in the Vault, they reference Blue Loctite as being used. But when I poke around the web, I see people saying you need to use heat to break fasteners using the Red stuff.

I didn't use any, but red or blue will work. I would use blue since you may want to remove it again.

Is there any interest in me creating a link, here, with pictures and doing a play by play when I replace the rotor disk ?
