It's all mental. You can drill till the wheels fall off but if you can't shake the apprehension it won't make a difference. No matter what your skill level is, it doesn't change the rest of the world. Practice only raises the odds in your favor - it won't make you accident proof.
When I bought my TA in 03 and started riding again after 25 or so years I had several close calls that made me question if I really wanted to ride again or if it was just some mid-life fantasy. A few of the close calls were out of my control, but most were me being out of control.
It takes time and it takes the right attitude. Each of us has to weigh the risks involved and make a decision.
