No way I would do it. Legal or not. Too many crazy drivers out there dying to show their road rage.

Paul, as you may remember, for years at this website I've tried to explain to so many of you who live in other parts of the country how this native Californian for decades found lane-splitting to be in many cases not only a safer alternative than strict adherence to "lane discipline" in that state but that ALSO how the idea of pissing cagers off because of it is a very VERY rare occurrence in California and because of its decades and decades of acceptance by the general population of Californians, and unlike an apparent mindset in most other parts of the country where cagers and motorcyclists with no "historical culture" of this practice happening seem to think it's somehow "rude" and/or "dangerous".
(...and so, I'm NOT going to waste anymore of my keystroke attempting to further enlighten the rest of you here, 'cause I KNOW that it would in fact be just THAT, a waste of my time...'cause YOU guys back east apparently and unfortunately will NEVER "get it"!!!)

Oh I get it Dwight. I just don't trust the other driver as far as I can throw them. I understand that CA has had decades of this idea being practiced by motorcyclists and it is probably the only state that it is now legal but I am not going to trust my life to how someone Might or Might NOT react. In my opinion it is kind of like riding w/o a helmet. In states where it is legal that's the persons choice and I am not messing with someone's freedom of choice. I'm just saying when you lane split you are putting your safety in someone else's hands and personally I am not going to do it however tempting it may be to save a few minutes or help the flow of traffic. And Dwight old buddy, you can't tell me there are no cases of road rage out in La La land, can you? Everyone just lives in perfect harmony and lets the bikers breeze on ahead w/o being resentful?? I'm not buying it. If I were going to make a trip up the coast on a MC I would avoid LA and the highways around there at all cost!

Well, no, I don't think so, Paul.
(...but I DO hear that in much of the more "rural" areas of this great country of ours, the previously mentioned "Banjo Music" DOES often come in MUCH more loud and clearer than it does in the more "suburban" and "urban" locations, anyway...perhaps you've noticed this TOO, eh?!)

Well I know how to settle this my friend. The next time you and I get together for a ride up the coast, I will let you go first until I can get used to all this new fangled lane splitting stuff.

It's a deal! I'll be happy to "show ya the ropes", alright!
Ain't nothin' in all the world, and especially in NE PA , that's as beautiful as the coast of California and little ride up PCH, ya know...especially through the BIG SUR area!
(...though of course, this here area around Sedona ain't too bad on the ol' eyes EITHER, ya know...though of course this here backward state of Arizona hasn't seemed enlightened enough yet to allow lane-spitting, and so this would be a moot point in these environs, unfortunately)

Been doing it for years here. Now for about the last year,I can do it legally . It's ok in SLOW moving or STOPPED traffic, and you go SLOWLY,not to mention ALERTLY, between the cages. "Filtering" through traffic would probably be a better description for what I do than "lane splitting" Road rage still occasionally happens with jealous moron four wheelers,as in "There goes another one" "Why am I stuck here?" mentality

Washington State is thinking somewhat similarly, although from what I remember about the bill (and I haven't heard of any progress on this bill) motorcycles would be able to filter in the left most part of the left most lane (between the left most lane and the shoulder). In some interpretations I have read this also means you can ride on the shoulder. A bit confusing.

I remember us doing a little lane splitting in Cali Mike. It was like 40 feet or so but at least we got to indulge.

Is lane splitting allowed in counter flow traffic or just in one direction? I remember doing lane splitting in Europe on two lane roads in heavy traffic and no one honking. Of course one must watch out for the other bike coming in the opposite direction. Makes so much sense in heavy traffic cities ala L.A.

Lane splitting is not in the DMV handbook but Lane Sharing is. Dwight is correct in saying that the drivers move over for you- most of the time!
I used to travel from work (San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station) down I-5 from San Clemente to Oceanside and there is only 3 off ramps in 18 miles. One lets you pull off into a view point overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the 2nd one is at Las Pulgas where the entry to Camp Pendleton is and the 3rd is a rest stop. Many times it would be backed up for 5 miles due to an accident. As long as you don't blast past the cars and scare the drivers there's no trouble. When they are crawling along and we can do 30 mph between them the cars don't have enough time or space to "cut you off". Some people do "drift" over to try and block you but then you just go round the opposite side of them. It can be nerve wracking "sharing the lane" but you have to be focused while doing it. When doing it for a long time you start to pick up your speed and its real easy to reach 50mph and the cars are only doing 10mph so you have to rein it in a bit. I've had a driver cut me off on a surface street and i ended up brushing into a construction cone. Thats the worst instance for me and all was ok. I hope there are other states that do allow it.

No, actually Ryk, the way that Ruskie is lane-splitting would definitely NOT be how I ever did it in California. And in fact, doing it IN that manner would definitely get you one hellaciously expensive ticket to boot.
Nope, going between 10-20 or so MPH faster than the crawling traffic is the only manner in which to do this safely.
And also of course, pulling between cars at a stoplight and then as soon as your light changes to green while checking for any last second and late cross-traffic and then a handful of throttle, leaves all that sheet-metal which is our biggest "enemy" out there, far behind you and instead of just a few short feet away.
(...yep, but once again I suppose this simple little concept is much too "complicated" for many of those in other parts of the country to comprehend, huh!)

Not only is it a bad idea here but yesterday I was working my way up the shoulder on I80 in the flatbed with my emergency lights going on my way to the accident that had stopped traffic and people were moving to try and block me getting past them!
Pick up had rolled over several times.

Des is correct, lane splitting has never been in the Cali DMV handbook nor in the statutes, but like Dwight points out has always been the way it's done. The legislature has decided to include it in the statutes and DMV handbook to inform cage drivers.

I like the concept and did it at times back in the '70s when drivers weren't as aggressive. But the reality now is more like what Ian experienced. Maybe a few years of experience and some hefty fines for those who "open doors" and such would reduce the risk.
But I always take the long way round to avoid traffic, so it isn't really an issue for me.

Yeah, I keep hearin' about this whole "opening doors" thing you guys fear back east.
Ya know, maybe MORE folks back east should learn how to chill out AND maybe come to the realization that for every motorcyclist "beating the traffic" by lane-splitting means that there's one LESS commuter in some big freakin' SUV clogging up the lanes around 'em and further delaying THEIR freakin' commute to and from work, EH?!
(...aaah, but unfortunately once again, this simple little concept/epiphany seems lost and unattainable on those located east of the Colorado River and the Sierra Mountains, HUH?!!!)

I wouldn't trust the genteel people around Seattle, as angry as they drive. Dwight, perhaps you need to explore lane splitting again, I'll even send you some flowers, if you land in the hospital or the morgue..

Hmmmmmm...I see I shouldn't have just confined my earlier description of the location of people with no clue about the safe and congestion-lessening practice of Lane-Splitting AND evidently people with a lot of "Anger Management Issues" to just those located "east of the Colorado River and the Sierra Mountains", EH?!
(...'cause evidently there's ALSO a whole lot of people UP NORTH there in that cold, damp and rainy locale where they built that there Space Needle tower for that World's Fair back in the day, eh Ryk?!)

Don't forget 55% of the people you encounter on the road here, are completely baked from our legal pot, another 30% act pizzed about something, who knows what. The rest are fairly normal and polite, just don't expect them to pull over and render assistance to anybody. I totally avoid Seattle and the adjoining I-5 corridor if I can. That's why I ride over to Montana or Idaho, even the Dakotas when I go on a rideabout. You can't pull over to scratch your butt, without somebody stopping and asking if you need any help in the rural states.

Gotta say Dwight, you've done a lot of keystrokes considering "I'm NOT going to waste anymore of my keystroke attempting to further enlighten the rest of you here ...
Well Ade, you know what they say doncha: "Hope Springs Eternal"!
Translation: "Just figured if I'd keep hittin' these naysayers here with a few FACTS, then maybe JUST maybe they'd eventually see the light"!
(...but yeah once again, some people just will never "get it" and no matter HOW many facts you give 'em...and so yeah again, all these keystrokes of mine WERE in vain, huh!...such is life, EH?!)

REALLY, Ryk??? You're sayin' here that over HALF the motorists in Washington state now days are HIGH on WEED?!!!
Now c'mon, dude. You wouldn't be tryin' to offer up some outlandishly made up statistic here just to attempt to strengthen your argument, now would ya?
(...'cause sorry, I'm findin' THIS more than little hard to believe, 'cause while I KNOW that lousy freakin' dreary weather you guys get up that-a-way CAN be VERY depressive for people, I REALLY doubt that a MAJORITY of people up there are NOW resortin' to smokin' the ol' Wacky Weed in order to help them COPE with that?!!!)

The bottom line is with so many fooling with their smart phones, putting on make-up, people stoned and others with evil attitudes, driving on the freeway, I'm not going to start lane splitting, if for no other reason, basic survival. IIRC, Our beloved Friar, bought it on a Cali freeway, was he lane splitting or just going with the flow of traffic? I do not remember ever reading the details of his demise on here. Enlighten me if you know, Dwight.

If I remember right the police report on Friar's accident said there were no other cars around him that caused the accident and he was in the far left commuter lane. So no, I do no think he was lane splitting. My "guess", is he looked up and saw the traffic stopped and locked his brakes up, like I did last fall. The brakes on the R-III classic were huge. Anti-lock brakes could have possibly saved his life. My next bike will have ABS.

So riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous, but we already knew that. Still not going to press my luck and start lane splitting and trusting cagers to behave appropriately..
