I like the concept and did it at times back in the '70s when drivers weren't as aggressive. But the reality now is more like what Ian experienced. Maybe a few years of experience and some hefty fines for those who "open doors" and such would reduce the risk.
But I always take the long way round to avoid traffic, so it isn't really an issue for me.
