No way I would do it. Legal or not. Too many crazy drivers out there dying to show their road rage.
Paul, as you may remember, for years at this website I've tried to explain to so many of you who live in other parts of the country how this native Californian for decades found lane-splitting to be in many cases not only a safer alternative than strict adherence to "lane discipline" in that state but that ALSO how the idea of pissing cagers off because of it is a very VERY rare occurrence in California and because of its decades and decades of acceptance by the general population of Californians, and unlike an apparent mindset in most other parts of the country where cagers and motorcyclists with no "historical culture" of this practice happening seem to think it's somehow "rude" and/or "dangerous".
(...and so, I'm NOT going to waste anymore of my keystroke attempting to further enlighten the rest of you here, 'cause I KNOW that it would in fact be just THAT, a waste of my time...'cause YOU guys back east apparently and unfortunately will NEVER "get it"!!!)
Oh I get it Dwight. I just don't trust the other driver as far as I can throw them. I understand that CA has had decades of this idea being practiced by motorcyclists and it is probably the only state that it is now legal but I am not going to trust my life to how someone Might or Might NOT react. In my opinion it is kind of like riding w/o a helmet. In states where it is legal that's the persons choice and I am not messing with someone's freedom of choice. I'm just saying when you lane split you are putting your safety in someone else's hands and personally I am not going to do it however tempting it may be to save a few minutes or help the flow of traffic. And Dwight old buddy, you can't tell me there are no cases of road rage out in La La land, can you? Everyone just lives in perfect harmony and lets the bikers breeze on ahead w/o being resentful?? I'm not buying it. If I were going to make a trip up the coast on a MC I would avoid LA and the highways around there at all cost!
And like I said AGAIN here Paul, YES, I CAN tell you that after riding motorcycles from 1967 to 2010 on the streets and freeways of Los Angeles California and its environs, NO, I never ONCE encountered ANY examples of "road rage" directed MY way as I lane-split though all the cagers sittin' idle or barely moving on said roadways.
In fact, and in too many cases to recount to you here Paul, the motorists would actually move to the opposite side of the lane as I was coming up between them and would open UP a larger path for me get by them.
(...imagine THAT?!...people actually not goin' all freakin' "macho-ass" and thinkin' that I was somehow "insulting" and/or that I was "getting away with something" by doing that...aaah, but then again I suppose you know how "crazy" all those people are and how "so un-American" and "wimpy" they all are out there in "La La Land", HUH?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
