My big trip is gonna start next Saturday. Two of my cousins and I will be riding up to International Falls, then up around Canada a ways, then they will head back home. Me, I'm gonna take a sharp turn and drive across Canada to Vancouver, where I'm gonna meet up with Keith for some mountain riding for a couple of days. After that, back down south, maybe as far as San Francisco, via highway 1, then head back east across the northern states, back to Iowa. I'm kinda debating about San Francisco, though. I'd like to see some of the sights (Golden Gate, Haight Asbury) but it's a ways down there and I worry about traffic. I can DO traffic in big cities, but I try to avoid it when I can. Any suggestions/advice regarding SF? Is there a good way I can leave the bike somewhere and get around some other way? Sights I should take in? And, any suggestions about routes back home will be considered.

Well, the ice is gone from the Icebox, so you don't have to worry about falling in the river. I did that once near Baudette. Sounds like a good trip. Looking forward to the Ride Report.

We rented a Harley in San Francisco some years back, the traffic was not bad at all. Motorcycle parking there is usually free as well, and you can split lanes. We ended up riding the coastal highway to John Muir Forest, then out to Sonoma and Napa Valley, and Sausalito. I have wanted to return there on my own bike ever since then.

I would suggest that if you are as far south as SF that you ride east across the San Joaquin valley and ride thru Yosemite park, taking Tioga pass over the sierras. From there you could either go across the desert (Utah and Colorado) or go north up to I-80 then heads east.

Sounds like a great trip.I'm sure Keith will have some very nice spots to show you.Beware he has bears in his yard tho.

Rich, your trip sounds great & reminds me a bit of my own ride to the CA Coast. If you are gonna ride hwy 1 in CA. be careful Bro. They were re-surfacing with a slurry coat from Big Sur to Morro Bay when I was out there a year or two ago....probably fine now tho. Check out the wineries around Paso Robles & Cambria....best CA wines I've ever had.

Dam RIGHT! I'm going to work for a half day today and then I'll be home early to get more ready. I've been talking to a lot of people who have been out west to SF and so forth, got some good advice from people who have lived out that way. And I gleaned a few ideas from my friends on here, of course. Heading out Saturday morning, rain or shine, for the longest tour I've ever taken. Should be at least four thousand miles or so. Lot's of people have told me I'm crazy to take a trip like this on a bike, course, those people aren't bikers and don't understand. Wife isn't coming on this trip and that is kinda a bummer. We've traveled a good long ways together. But I took plenty of trips alone before we married so it's not totally new. I'll be riding with my cousins for the first leg, about three days. Then, they'll head back and I take that big right turn to Keiths Bed, Breakfast and Touring Emporium! (Thanks Keith!) Hopefully post some pictures for you fella's from Keiths. And you know I'll be thinking of you poor working slobs every day I'm out there!
