For X or O ring chains the chain lube is only there to keep the outside surface of the chain from rusting and to help maintain the integrity of X or O ring seals. Which is why I use the Amsoil HD Metal protector. It is designed to condition and prolong the life of rubber and plastic. I actually spray it on the cars CV boots and all Power steering boots. Since doing that I haven't had a CV boot ripe in any of my cars...
