is the oem chain fitted to a bonneville america 2011 an x ring chain. also trying to find lub that dosnt splatter the back wheel with lube I know this is a big topic everybody has their views even to dont lube.javascript:void(0)

Most any motorcycle store (or maybe Walmart) will have some non- sling aerosol chain lube. I raise mine up and make a chalk mark where I start and spin and spray til I get back to the mark. Just a conservative shot will walk into the void.

That's funny! Yet over the years, I ended up following Ian's lead and don't lube my chain anymore. It seems to last just as long or even longer than when I once routinely lubricated and the sprockets seem okay too.

Actually, I think Ian's method to be mostly correct. I never lubed my chain for the first 15 thousand miles. Then, while in the Florida Keys on vacation with the wife, I noticed a "growling" noise coming from the chain. On inspection, some of the links were stiff. So I got a can of lube and sprayed it. Sound went away. I rode that chain for another 10 K, but even afterward, I lubed new chains very sparingly.

It is either an X ring or O ring chain, just cannot remember which.
Amsoil makes a chain lube called Heavy Duty Metal Protector. Basically it is a Marine grade wax with rust inhibitory additives. I use it very lightly on the bikes chains. I use it for undercoated on all my cars (when needed). I also use it to treat the threads of bolts for anything being mounted on the bikes or cars. Just not on anything being directly attached to the engine or exhaust.
For X or O ring chains the chain lube is only there to keep the outside surface of the chain from rusting and to help maintain the integrity of X or O ring seals. Which is why I use the Amsoil HD Metal protector. It is designed to condition and prolong the life of rubber and plastic. I actually spray it on the cars CV boots and all Power steering boots. Since doing that I haven't had a CV boot ripe in any of my cars.
So basically with our chains when you do lube it a little will go a long way. I might lube my chains maybe once every 1000 to 1200 miles. I base it more on looks than on mileage.

I forgot, when I change the tires on the bikes I use the chain lube as the tire lube when installing the new tires. I also use it on the inside of the America's rims to help with rust prevention, and to protect the rim rubber band. Or whatever it is called.

Might not be a good idea. Aliphatic hydrocarbons tend to degrade rubber products.

Didn't know hydrocarbons can be lazy. Alipathy can be an enemy to almost anything i spose.

Reread my first posting. The chain lube I use (as most chain lubes should) actually conditions rubber and plastic and helps prolong them.

Maxum chain wax , the best and I got that info from factory Triumph rep . Last longer with very little sling

Your chain has a good coating of Amsoil's Heavy Duty Metal Protector, unless you've lubed it since the GA Rally!

I used to use Maxum chain wax also...... until I got the Rocket then I gave it all away....Really!!
