That's funny! Yet over the years, I ended up following Ian's lead and don't lube my chain anymore. It seems to last just as long or even longer than when I once routinely lubricated and the sprockets seem okay too.
Actually, I think Ian's method to be mostly correct. I never lubed my chain for the first 15 thousand miles. Then, while in the Florida Keys on vacation with the wife, I noticed a "growling" noise coming from the chain. On inspection, some of the links were stiff. So I got a can of lube and sprayed it. Sound went away. I rode that chain for another 10 K, but even afterward, I lubed new chains very sparingly.
