Sounds like a song. Anyway, the Speedmastress got caught in the rain today, and went to spluttrin' and cuttin' out from off throttle up to 3K. From idle up to 3K it misses, stumbles, and has the associated "pow"! Get over 3 and it levels out. Not a bad igniter, has a new Procom.
The RPM range rules out sidestand and a few other usual suspects. Hmmm, gots me bumfuddled. Any wisdom from the Enlightened Masses ?
Thank you, thank you very much.

First thought was water getting in the CDI, 2nd was maybe a crack in the insulation of a coil. Tank breather getting blocked with water? Cut the end of that at an angle to prevent that.

Yeah, I remember some talk about that. But the leveling out at 3K ? Would a breather cause the reactions I'm having? I'm sorta leaning toward electrical. I may get some coils and go for a rainy lab rat ride.

Get a spray bottle of water and lightly spray the electrics with the bike idling to see if you can recreate.

Did you disconnect your TPS sensor. I've seen these cause some unusual cuttout symptoms. Disconnecting could isolate it from the system.

If the vent is plugging up, crack the fuel tank cap to verify.

The breather was just a thought, I had thought it would probably get worse the greater the demand for fuel as you bring up. Just figured I would throw it out there since it came to mind as a possibility although I would think probably not your cause.

If there is a crack in the insulation of your coil it may only act up when hot so get it up to temp when testing.

Wet coil(s)... just my guess 'cause they sit out there all vulnerable and such.

OK, I ruled out the obvious suspects, I put Lola's coils and igniter on the Speedy and it still does that thing. I'm starting to think carbs, but then again it acted up in the rain. Coincidence?
OK, it's been in the sun drying out for two days. If you roll on the throttle slowly from 1K it will go up to way up there smoothy, but if you crack open the throttle it just makes a big hole of nothing and has the ensuing crack pop and then will catch up. I'm bumfuzzled. Any fresh ideas ?

I have not disconnected the TPS like Greggor said, that might help ya think?

Check the grounds, sand them down nice and shiny. have you checked the hidden fuel filter, the petcock?
After that it's time to pull the carbs and do a deep clean.
That's my three cents

Makes me think of something to do with the carbs. Either too much petrol or nothing at all. Do you empty the bowls when cracking it up? Some dirt in the petcock preventing the bowls to be filled up again? Are the membrans fine? Water in the bowls? Have a look and good luck!

I wouldn't rule out the carbs. Saturday AM was cool, bike ran fine, ripped up to redline fine, still had that dead spot on the throttle snap but would still wind up good. Off she goes to a Memorial Day parade, and voila! When it got a bit warm it went to total crappy. It came back on a rollback to the carport. Cooled off, now runs good again.
Thinkin' a bad coil(s) and /or igniter has exposed itself.

Have you measured the resistance of the pick up coil when cold and again when hot? I remember a rider that had the coil test good cold but failed when hot, it could make coils and igniter look duff.

No, I has not done that O Wise One. Makes sense . I'm assuming the correct readings and procedure are in my Triumph manual.
Thank you

Got an OEM igniter from a member here, came off an '07, put it on and the Speedy has never run better. Instant fix. Bad Procom I suppose. I may send it back to see if they can test it. The Procom was fairly new, seriously messing with my diagnostics. Thanks for all the good advice and info.

Yep, I got one them there faulty Procom's as well. The unit started causing idling issues. Replaced it with an old OEM that had crapped out previously. Solved the idle issue, ran that thing ole OEM to Birmingham, Ga etc. ran like a top until last weekends Dragon run. Crapped the bed, so I reinstalled the questionable Procom.
I will be replacing the Procom with a Firestarter, soon.

Yeah Mike, a new part that's defective will wreak havoc wif yer diagnostics.

If you're an Agnostic it will still wreak havoc wif yer diagnostics. Maybe too much peyote in the coffee. The White Buffalo handed the OEM igniter to the Eagle and he brought it to me.
