Actually, I could totally see me doing the same thing!  And that was the ONLY thing different that I could see between the "el cheapo" lock I bought and the "better" quality locks that were advertised; that is, the more expensive locks came with a "reminder cable", that attaches to the lock and then you loop the other end around the handlebars so you see it and don't forget to take it off. Simple enough. I fashioned a small loop out of coat hanger, epoxied it to the lock and got a cheap plastic cord to attach to. Honestly, my el cheapo lock looks as good as anything else I saw and it was 1/5 the cost!
