I dunno....the first winter (2009) I moved into my place the furnace bit the dust (it had been installed in 1964) the replacement woulda run me around $2700 installed if I didn't have (which I did) a home warranty. My out of pocket was $465.
Guess you get what you pay for in the long run...in 2011 my AC went out [also installed in 1964](bad condenser fan) & the repair/service contractor quoted me $4700 to replace the entire AC system & a furnace (he recommended a slightly higher BTU rating than was installed 2 yrs before.) Anyhoo, I got a replacement fan & starter capacitor, did the work myself to repair the AC...my out of pocket $140.
