I'm old school.
I have trouble getting used to a "one size fits all" kind of software. I know it's convenient, but it lacks functionalities that dedicated apps have.
I prefer to have separate apps for my music and movie watching.
I forgot if you are on Mac or PC.
For Mac, the absolute best music player, IMHO, is Audirvana. For PC, Foobar is well recognized.
For video, VLC plays anything. Both Mac and PC. I set up my computer so I can use a VST on my audio feed to get the best sound.
JRiver, on the PC side is popular, but I find it very clunky, and the sound is good, but not great. You absolutely need an audio interface to get the best results.
Sorry, Jeff. "Audirvana"??? "Foobar"??? "JRiver"???
Look dude! IF you were TRULY "old school", then you'd be just like ME and STILL listenin' to your favorite tunes like I DO...over the freakin' FM RADIO!!!
(...okay, okay...is there such a thing as "ancient school"???)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
