I've not been involved in any "high speed pursuits" myself for a long time, at least none that I've noticed.
But, I can tell a couple of tails...
A coworker had bought himself a Jaguar 140 saloon and wanted to show it off. So, one Friday, some of us piled in and we headed for Las Vegas "the quick way". Somewhere near the narrow place in the road called Searchlight, we got pulled over. At that time, the CHP usedd Dodges with 413 Max Wedge engines in that area, so there was no point in trying to run. Having read that honesty and courtesy was best when dealing with such situations, the guy driving decided that it would be best to tell the truth as he saw it.
"Do you know how fast you were going back there?"
"Yes officer, exactly 120."
When he managed to stop laughing...
"My
calibrated speedometer and my
certified stopwatch both said you were going
exactly 83. Now watch your speed. If I see you doing it again, I'm going to write you up."
In the late 60's, I was working with a guy who was obsessed with Corvettes. After wrok we were going out for a beer when a bright yellow Maseratti passed us on the freeway. Mr. Corvettes forever" asked, "Are those things fast?"
Yeah, they're pretty fast."
"Good!", And he downshifted and put his foot down. As we were watching the Italian taillights getting smaller, a CHP cop in a Dodge came up behind and put on his redlights. We stopped, the cop said, "Stay here, I'll be right back."
We waited for a while, decided maybe he wasn't coming bak and started down the freeway at somewhat below the speedlimit. A few miles down, we saw a towtruck and the patrol car, and the cop and handcuffed Maseratti driver standing there looking down over the side of the freeway. As we passed, we noticed a big splash of bright yellow paint on his oversize front bumper. It looked like the guy tried to run and the cop decided it was a greater hazard to chase him and pushed him over the side. At that point, we both agreed that it would probably be a waste of time to try to run from a cop if he was driving a Dodge.
