I put the black face tachometer on my 13 America last year and ran into the same problem. Backed off and drank a cold beverage then looked again. If I remember correctly, I had to remove a nut on the back of the tachometer before I was able to plug it in. Had to look close to figure this out. It has been a year since I put it on but it was simple plug and play once I figured it out.
