Once they get noisy damage is already being done, may run a while that way but you are most likely beating up the sealing surfaces and/or lobes. Good thing I'm not a mechanic or I might know something.

OK, I'll quit with the sarcasm. Seems to me you are at the point of needing adjustment and the engine is already open, it would be stupid to not do the adjustment while it's open already. The adjustment isn't hard to do, hardest part is you need to source the shims you need once measuring is done.
