Similar to a Street Rod and a Rat Rod in car lingo, IMO

It's not speeding till you get pulled over.

In the classic sense I think of a bobber as a bike that has had weight removed to enhance agility while a chopper has a cut and modified frame and is really about straight line cruising. To me, bobbers feature cut or missing fenders and solo seats and minimalist running gear; choppers extend forks and neck angles and frequently remove the rear suspension in favor of a hard tail.

I think of bikes trimmed like this when I think of a bobber and I was mildly surprised to see how many hard tails turned up in an image search.

Choppers don't get much more classic than this.

typically bobbers have the tins cut and other things removed/modified like lights, bars, seats, exhaust, wheels, front ends...basically the frame is left unmodified. Choppers usually contain a modified frame. Doesn't mean that it has a hardtail/rigid or long front ends. Kinda like calling an oil bag an oil tank. Basically the same thing as they do the same job. Oil bags hang off the side, oil tanks are inside the frame somewhere.

Bobber is when you "bob" the fenders and lighten the bike. Chopper is when the frame is cut to modify it.

I USED to think that a "Bobber" was anything owned (or performed ) on anyone named Bob.
Hence, ALL my bikes were Bobbers, and most of my dreams were about "Bobbers".

Since then, I found out I was only HALF right. But the most important half was right!

And so, I suppose "Choppers" are only owned by Orthodontists, RIGHT erle?!

Btw folks, ANOTHER thing that differentiates a "Bobber" from a "Chopper" is that AFTER all the customizing is done on the former, the machine can STILL usually be used to have fun on while traversing twisty roads with some measure of efficiency, and whereas the latter because of its stretched out wheelbase is a veritable B*I*T*C*H to ride on such roads, and hence the reason I personally have NO affinity whatsoever for the latter, 'cause I REALLY LIKE riding on twisty roads 'cause THAT'S were all the FUN is and NOT on some freakin' straight-as-a-freakin'-arrow road. THAT'S BORING!!! Hell, ya MIGHT as well be in some freakin' CAR, 'cause ya don't LEAN a freakin' car into turns like ya can a MOTORCYCLE! Well, at least motorcycles that haven't had the ability to LEAN into turns with some efficiency taken away from 'em anyway!!!

(...however, I suppose IF your "objective" is SOLELY to "look really cool" while ridin' around on some straight-as-a-freakin'-arrow road, then a Chopper MIGHT be for YOU!...yep, as they say, "To Each Their Own", RIGHT?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
