LINK Test mules are vehicles built to test new designs and put miles and abuse in the real world to see if improvements are needed. Even with CAD-CAM real world testing is needed. Recently Ford went to the trouble to build an all-aluminum F-150 stamped with previous generation panels but with the new EcoBoost 2.7L engine and ran it in the Baja 1000. Everyone saw the mule but nobody knew what it really was.

edit: True the reservoir could be behind the side covers but with the big air box, battery, fuse block and ECU already there it would be a tight fit to find room for a large enough bottle.
I'm fairly certain we all know what a test mule is. My post was my poor attempt at humor. That apparently was missed by some.
