Better Sounding Pipes with No Remap - Impossible?

I was wondering if there are better sounding pipes where you would not have to remap. The bike performs great and I don't want to change the map, but was just wondering if I could get a better exhaust note. I don't want to do a baffelectomy; I just want to slip on a new exhaust. Is it possible to get a better sounding pipe without a remap? When I lived in the Harley world, the wisdom was you could replace the pipes alone and there would be no need to remap. I've searched around, and it doesn't appear to be that way in the Triumph world - it seems like you would have to do a remap if you don't want your gas mileage, performance or pipe color to change. But I thought I would ask to see if anyone has done this.

The base tune/map is on the lean side of things for emissions reasons rather than for optimum performance. If you go with mufflers that have any increased air flow, even just a little more, the Triumph TOR/aftermarket exhaust tune would be called for. Seems there was some brand (was not a low $ brand) that advertised no tuning change required but it was not discouraged. Having the map changed at the dealer really is not much of a job. Should not be more than a half hour labor as it only requires removing the seat, accessing the OBDII cable, connecting their Dealertool and a couple of keystrokes. Of course you can do it yourself with a little PC knowledge, a $20 cable and TuneECU. As long as you make only exhaust and not air intake changes the TOR tune will do a fine job with most any aftermarket exhaust.

I agree, your air fuel ratio will go way lean if you don't remap it. It won't matter at wide open throttle or idle but you will be cooking it at midrange.

What so the TOR tune is only for the exaust and not say a high flow air filter?

Correct. While many will go with a K&N, UNI or DNA filter, I think a much larger change in flow would be realized removing the very restrictive stock exhaust. Start modifying the air box and the equation changes a lot!
edit: changing the exhaust pipes lets more of the air/fuel combustion waste to leave the motor, making a significant change to the "air" flow into the motor calls for a matching change to the fuel flow for the a/f mix. A better flowing air filter adds some more air but not a lot to the mix.

is your concern the cost behind mapping or the act of doing it? Ive done Karens bike (13 Bonny) and it was a cake walk. And if you want some great sounding pipes I got a brand new set of SS cannons Just saying.

Thanks all for your continuing comments!
Z, the concern I have is that when I had my 2009 America, I replaced the stock pipes with long TOR's - the dealer remapped, and for the most part things were OK, but I got decel pops that were sometimes like mini explosions. I asked the dealer about it, and they said I should remove the airbox and the AIS and everything would be OK. I know the AIS removal is no big deal, but I didn't want the extra expense in removing the airbox. I just was surprised that the remap would cause the decel popping. I am trying to avoid that problem with the Speedmaster. Thanks for the comments!

Did you do this map yourself, or did you have it done? If you did it yourself does it void the warranty?

Thanks hambone - I noticed I didn't clarify that I had the dealer do it. Post updated.

Your mini explosions were not "because" the re-map was done. It was because they were no longer "muffled" by the stock mufflers! The gurgle and BANG would have been much worse had the re-map not been done. I tried both maps when I first had my TORs put on and it was MUCH worse with the base map compared to the TOR map. Removing the AI (air box can stay) will reduce it noticeably.

No, as long as it is the TOR/Aftermarket Exhaust map with no modifications. Of course many will pull the air injection and disable the alarm in the map but that would likely be overlooked as no fueling changes were made.

Thanks again MattyMo - makes total sense. When I do this to my Speedie, I will make sure to remove the AI then.

Thanks,
Mike

Just put EMGO 19 Turnouts on my 14 America, Brought it to the dealer and they said there is not a TOR map for it. The computer automatically adjusts for it? Would feel better if it were remapped, Any one have any ideas?
