My simplistic view on Islam. Is that it is at its base level based on being a nice peaceful lets get along type of religious belief.
So is Christianity. Tolerance and charity and sharing are supposed to be hallmarks of both religions. Christianity at its worst existed during the middle ages when ignorance and a papal system designed to ensure political power and influence caused the church to force people to live in fear of retribution for failing to meet the demands of the church.
Imagine if your average Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Catholic carried on with the ignorant fervor that gripped christianity during the middle ages. It would be plug ugly for sure. We do have small enclaves of extremism within western religious beliefs and we do tolerate them and will continue to do so until they become violent or dangerous to our society.
Islam has and still does maintain the same level of 7th century backwardness in many parts of the middle east.
Thats why these little mullah loving dune bunnies are so difficult to get along with. Virtually zero change since the 7th century. No advances in tolerance whatsoever. Still stuck in the freaking middle ages. Women virtually enslaved in these cultures, not allowed to pursue education nor have a say in the destiny of their own families. Imagine for one moment if we were living in a patriarchal society even half as strict as what exists in Saudi Arabia. We would be one messed up bunch.
There are many followers of islam who are in no way or means associated with nor support the ugliness that is pervasive in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and any of the other stans in the region. But the few who do and are in support of it are sure giving it a bad name.
The sooner we smack them into the 21st century the better off they will be. Its clear they are not coming to this century by themselves. History is unflinching in its regard for cultures that are behind the power curve technologically and or from the standpoint of being culturally backwards or having existed in a vacuum isloated from the rest of the world.
If you are not ready to move forward or you cling to a way of life that is inconsistent with the world norm your culture is asking to be overrun and forcibly changed.
The American Indian culture was doomed to this fate from the first moment European settlers set foot on North America. They were not treated respectfully either but simnly swept aside by a power they had no means to resist. The power of the Europeans and their regard of the American native as a savage doomed them right or wrong. Ultimately the correction factor for Islamic culture will happen. We are witnessing it now. Truth be told they could be allowed to live at the level of intolerant ignorance and backwardness they live in if they could just learn to leave the rest of us alone. We know that is not going to happen.

you may classify your view of Islam as simplistic, my friend, but it shows a level of intelligence and understanding that is far from simplistic...you have obviously given this some serious thought, and your statements reflect that...I personally wholeheartedly agree with you...although it breaks my heart to see the terror and the ugliness and the death and destruction that is going on in this regard, especially to the little kids, I know this has to happen...I only hope it doesn't take too long...I honour and respect our fighting men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan who are making this happen...both our countries are losing soldiers (and civilians) who will make the world a better place in the long run...my most fervent prayer is that someone doesn't get crazy and start using nukes...

Hmmm, that's pretty funny Bogie, ever consider changing your name to Bogus Maximus? I'm willing to wager that that EXACT SAME phrase, albeit in Latin, was uttered by lots of Romans about the early Christians!! Why that's no serious religion, just a cult!! "Why their "God" doesn't even protect them from the Lions, yet they still stand their definantly! What fools they are for not believing as we believe! Everyone KNOWS that our religion is the only true religion!!!"

In defense of the "cult" statement......any religious entity that resorts to a level of terror and violence to attain its degree of compliance from its practitioners or those it wishes to convert may well be regarded as a "cult"
Certainly christianity during its dark days would be regarded as such with burnings at the stake, torture in widespread use, all the bad things that went on during the "inquisitions"......
A degree of civility is in order for Islam to fully shake its deserved reputation as a cult of hatred and intolerance currently unsurpassed by any other religious entity in the known world.
It takes only a few that eschew violence to spread an attitude of disbelief amongst westerners as to the legitimacy of Islam as a civilized religion of "peace"

Kevin, I wholeheartedly agree that moderate Muslims MUST stand up and take control of their religion from extremists, and show that it is a religion of peace as most normal, moderate Muslims state it is. Unfortunately, extremists and far right clerics continue to dominate Islam, and all of their bad works overshadow many good works by "normal" Muslims. That any religion should be labelled or judged by the actions of a few (there are how many BILLION Muslims in the world who DON'T protest or burn effigies or strap bombs to their bodies, compared with a few hundred or thousand in Iraq and elsewhere). Islam and Christianity MUST learn to coexist, especially in todays world with the nuclear threat. Even Islam itself must learn to handle it's own internal issues (Shiite vs Sunni for instance), just as Christianity is still learning to deal with its issues (Catholics vs Protestants and Christians vs Jews). There should be very little room for extremists in any religion to hold much sway, especially if those views cross into using violence to spread the message.

But you have to admit that the issues or problems amongst Christian theologies pale in comparison to the problem of "Islam"
After all how many christian sucide bombers have you heard of lately? Any christian terrorists flying airplanes into mosques or middle eastern architechture?
Any christian terrorists murdering Israelis wholesale or threatening to wipe them off the face of the earth? Nope.
Not that I am aware of. funny how one sucide bomber or aiplane full of whack jobs can pretty much sully the reputation of the whole club.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, I offer the following:
While peeling an orange the other day, some juice squirted me in the eye. OUCH! Son of a be-otch!!!
Sooooooooo,
oranges = fruit = pain
ergo
fruit = pain
Therefore, all fruit should be eliminated with extreme prejudice!!!!

Sigh
It appears, based on many comments made by members here and elsewhere that ignorance does indeed breed intolerance. Forgive me for addressing several different posts here:
VERY few of the terrorists are Iraqi or Afghan citizens. They are coming from other countries, most of them from the countries you mention.
Correct, terrorists come from all over. The 911 terrorists mainly were from Saudi Arabia, which has the lowest Islamic population of the countries I listed. According to the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Al-Quadi, which the U.S. Department of State, Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism lists as currently the largest terrorist threat organization, consists of mainly members from Egypt (28%), Jordan (19%), Yemen (13%) and Iraq (12%).. the rest is mostly a mix from Syria, Algeria, Sudan, Tunisa and Morroco. Palenstine (which is one of the larger Islamic populations) comprises less than 2%. They currently have their largest base in Afganastan, which is understandable, since the Al-Quadi movement itself was formed primarly as a result of the Soviet invasion of that country (sound familiar?) Funny how there are few members from the largest Islamic populations, isn't it?.
The sooner we smack them into the 21st century the better off they will be.
...
If you are not ready to move forward or you cling to a way of life that is inconsistent with the world norm your culture is asking to be overrun and forcibly changed.
I might ask, what exactly gives you or anyone else the right to 'smack' or forcibly change anyone else? There are other alternatives if you take off the blinders. Also, ever think that maybe some of the issues we are currently facing are a result of that kind of thinking (see example above)? How would you react if somebody came into your house, smacked you around a little and forced you to become a scientologist?
In defense of the "cult" statement......any religious entity that resorts to a level of terror and violence to attain its degree of compliance from its practitioners or those it wishes to convert may well be regarded as a "cult"
Oh, I get it now.. it's OK to force change (which of course will result in the usual resistance, violence, etc..) on what you consider 'backward' people, but only as long as it's not done in the name of religion. Sorry, but I don't buy into that line of thinking.
In addition, Islam cannot be forced upon anyone as your statement and others you have written seems to indicate. While every religion has some dialog about it being the one true religion, spreading the word, bringing people into the 'flock', etc.. Islam specifically states that it must be accepted unconditionally, without any outside force or pressure. Forcing 'those it wishes to convert' would have the opposite effect.
A degree of civility is in order for Islam to fully shake its deserved reputation as a cult of hatred and intolerance currently unsurpassed by any other religious entity in the known world.
A degree of civility is in order on both sides it seems.. As you have aptly demonstrated. However, the 'reputation' is largely a result of ignorance by those who misunderstand it, which fortunately can be cured
It takes only a few that eschew violence to spread an attitude of disbelief amongst westerners as to the legitimacy of Islam as a civilized religion of "peace"
Gee, where have we heard that before? This is hardly specific to Islam, or even religion. Ever heard of the term 'going postal'?
But you have to admit that the issues or problems amongst Christian theologies pale in comparison to the problem of "Islam"
When was the last time you picked up a history book! The current level and degree of violence/death/destruction is no where near the levels obtained during the height of christian insanity.
funny how one sucide bomber or aiplane full of whack jobs can pretty much sully the reputation of the whole club.
What is funny (in a sad kind of way) is how you acknoledge the falacy, and then go right ahead and fall into it anyway!
the logic is flawless

Of course.. the Conservative book service, " Conservatives serving Conservatives for 40 years".
Suggested reading: "The politically incorrect guide to Islam", with a bonus section; " Why the Crusades were justified wars of Christian self-defense.."
Hardly any bias there (Hurry up and get your copy now, as it's not available in book stores)
Suggested reading: " Mohammed: the ugly truth about the founder of the world's most violent religion"
Written by someone who " devoted his priestly life to introducing that nation's tens of millions of Muslims to Christianity."
Hint: Mohammed is not the 'founder' of Islam

Jeez Mr Unix. If you had bothered to read my posts you would not have bothered to take any of them out of context now would you?
As to the idea of history being flawless and nice..It aint. It is not a question of being right in the eyes of anyone. As I said. The American Indian was smacked right out of their hunter/gatherer culture quite forcibly as much by the inevitible force of human nature and a predetermined desire of European settlers to take their land. Ultimately... backward cultures get conquered ..thats all that I said. I can't think of a more backward, hostile culture in the world today than the middle eastern countries like Iran, Iraq, and all the stans. History marches on and on. Its inexorable force is and cannot be denied. As to who might have the right to forcibly fix the problem...once again history has written many cases where one country in order to protect its culture and people from another who wishes them harm can and will and has "kicked ******" and took names to do so. See WW2, WW1, see just about any old war. Its all in the winning and the losing.
If you win you determine who is right and who is wrong. If you lose you might just die if your enemy is a sociopath like Hitler or Tojo or Saddam Hussein or any number of paperhangers who have been taken to task in recorded history.
I dont know. Go ask the ghosts of the six million who died at the hands of a backward dictatorial sociopath named adolph hitler. Ask the ghosts of the Kurd children who were killed by saddam hussein with poison gas. I think if they could all talk to us they would say ...go get em boys and shoot straight. dont worry about the WMD BS go tget those murdering paperhangers and bring them to justice. I always wonder why liberals do not understand the idea of justice for criminals.
Now as to the idea of some moron coming into my house and trying to force me into becoming a scientologist....its not something I would worry about cause Tom Cruise has better things to do I am sure. Anyway someone would have to feel threatened by me in order to feel a need to smack me around. therefore I suggest by analogy that if our fine feathered islamic friends want to just start playing nice they wont have to worry about any western boogymen trying to "smack them around"
If they could just start acting like human freakin beings intead of third rate terrorist camel humpers the problem would fix itself with no worries.
It is their innate threat to the rest of the world at large that precipitated the issues we face today. It is their continued threat that demands action.
Liberals always think the problem can be fixed with "understanding and dialogue" ...
That idea went out the door on 9/11/01. A date that liberals conveniently play down or forget and an issue that is never forgotten by conservatives.

Just trying to offset your list.
I waded through the "10 misconceptions"
Without going to that tripe again (might make my eyes bleed) a few observations.
Misconception #? Islam and human rights, paragraphs explaining that Islam is not the reason the Western Culture has much better human rights than the middle east. Fact is human rights in the middle east suck.
Misconception # ? Islam tolerates other religions, Show me a Christan Church in Saudia Arabia
Misconception # ? Islam does not abuse the rights of women. Again paragraphs of drivel that doesn't mean a thing BECAUSE UNDER THE CULTURE WOMEN ARE ABUSED
I could go on, but the point is that your "10 misconceptions" reference is nothing but lipstick on a pig.

You guys crack me up! I do want to address one thing that Paul brought up though; Show me a Christan Church in Saudia ArabiaThat's true, only Islamic religious institutions are allowed in Saudi Arabia. Why? Well, Saudi Arabia, while its technically classified as an 'absolute monarchy', can really be considered a dictatorship. The people have no say in how their government is organized, run or governed. There are no political parties or elections. Media is highly censored, and while the people are fairly literate (78% of the population over the age of 15 can read and write), what and how they are taught are all controlled by the government, hence the king. Under the king, non-Islamic religions are not allowed to be practiced or observed. Under the king, unions and trade groups are not allowed. Under the king, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of just about anything is not allowed. Under the king, public theatres and cinemas are not allowed. And so on, and so on.. Given that, do you think the problem there is one of religion, or one of political structure? Cheers, Brad

Its both. If you take away the prop that is provided by the backward religious theocracy then the King will face revolution I expect. In the case of Saudi Arabia its a combination of the two.

As opposed to those fair and unbiased university types? If Mohammed didn't found Islam, who did? Right after writing to you on Sunday I went for a long ride and am just now getting back to this thread. I'll send you a great number of the Korans "war verses" in a day or two. I loaned out my books and notes on the subject to a local reporter a few weeks ago and need to get them back.

In which majority Moslem country are non Moslems treated as equals? Which majority Moslem country has a functioning democracy? Absolutist governments have existed throughout the world but it seems that Moslems prefer it that way. After all, Islam recognizes NO separation of Mosque and state, and the very name Islam means to submit.

OK Greg, now tell me how widespread this is? Is it widely recognized as truth? Are there thousands of church supported schools teaching this to millions of young boys and teaching them to blow themselves up in support of this? Or, does everyone else think Phelps and his little group are nuts who have gone off the deep end. As for the hateful message, it didn't come from the bible, it came from Phelps.

Down here where I'm at, I'd say pretty widespread! Just to give you an example. I went outside with a group of co-workers to a prayer service on 9/11/01 right after the Twin Towers collapsed, and the gentleman who led the prayer (a production supervisor studying to become a minister) launched into a "prayer" asking God to forgive us, and that in all fairness, the United States had brought upon the wrath of God for tolerating Homosexuality, Protitution, etc..." Sorry, I've heard it multiple times, and I'm sure my wife could provide examples of just such examples since a few coworkers where she works are openly Lesbian. Further, I can turn on the 700 Club, or any other TV Gospel (which is beamed to millions across the United States) and find people being preached to openly about how evil and vile homosexuality is. All one has to do is open ones eyes, it's pretty prevalent. Do I care for the opposite side from the far left with such nonsense as "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", not really, in fact, I don't care for extremes of either.
As for the hateful message, sorry, the quote FROM THE BIBLE, not Phelps, was:
Leviticus 18:22 states, "do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman; it is an abomination."
Abomination is a pretty strong word that conjures up hatred and despising of something, don't you think?

Phelps and his group are nutcases no doubt but other than being disrespectul to the families of casualties (I'm for shooting them on site for that) they do not appear to threaten or bring about violence to anyone else. They attempt to propagandize others to their belief but I dont think many are buying.
Anyway it would be a strong fallacy to compare them remotely to the islam groups/mullahs et al that constantly cry for murder and Jihad in their efforts to cleanse their world of "Infidels"
if any of the Phelps group accidentally trip and run into a full metal jacket nine millimeter round no one would complain for the most part but other than that and pissing off real Americans of good character they are just a bunch of misguided idiots to be ignored.

So are you expecting Christion Churches to start calling for the killing of homosexuals anytime soon? Personally I agree that homosexual acts are a sin. But in almost all cases the attitude of Christians is to hate the sin but love the sinner. I attend a very conservative church and the worst I've seen or heard concerning homosexuality was a couple of men asked to attend church elsewhere after they would not quit promoting their lifestyle. On the other hand, I can see how modern liberals could confuse that with the Taliban.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Gimpy, my man! Challenging other's belief systems NEVER gets old. That's the "fun" in it.
If we didn't talk about these differences and excercise the ol' grey matter now and then, this "fun" gets stiffled and then people sometimes fly airplanes into buildings, or take a Budget Rent-a-van full of fertilizer and park it next to a government building in Oklahoma City, OR some OTHER stupid a$$ UNGODLY and/or INHUMANE action!!!
And THIS is exactly the problem with people who BELIEVE that they are RIGHTEOUS in their beliefs and that no further discussion will be required.
Your Agnostic[questioning] co-Triumph rider, Dwight

Well, its cause we like to fight and as long as no one gouges out someones eyballs or kicks them in the nads we are all OK.
Actually its kinda fun for lots of us. The key focus on this forum is Speedmasters. (the black shiny ones are fastest and look best)...and then those funny lookin ones with the spokes. (look out meteor shower inbound)...but we need to talk about other junk from time to time and politics, towel heads, camel jockeys , and terrorists are certainly HOTKEY subjects everywhere these days.

Gimpy, Life's not always about "winning". Sometimes it's about learning.
And I think learning can only be done when one listens or reads another person's thoughts, which often predetermines their actions.
Cheers, Dwight (stay a step ahead of 'em, I always say...in THAT regard I guess I AM "winning")

Larry, you simply stated how hard it was to find passages in the Bible that could be twisted to stir up hatred. I didn't think we were going to cloud the issue with the respect for human life that most of us have vs the seeming lack of it in the mid-east and elsewhere. Fact is, it is simple for an extremist to find justification in any holy book for extremist acts...
