One of the funniest men to ever walk the planet has passed and I can't imagine what it will be like to only see him in reruns never to have anything new. He's been one of my favorites since Mork!! Not only could he be the funniest but he had an amazing talent for serious dramatic roles too. Amazing talent for sure.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

The funny man, leaves us all with profound sadness, one of my contemporaries, a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Always admired his talent, and support of Christopher Reeves. He will be missed. RIP.

One of my favorites since I first saw him on an HBO special almost 40 years ago. Funny as hell and not a bad dramatic actor either. A talent that will not be replaced.

Its the end of an era. One funny bugger.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

There will be a hush on late night talk shows tonight I suspect. From Johnny Carson on he has wowed audiences with his quick wit and sense of humour. I think only Johnathan Winter commanded such respect on the talk show circuit.

I loved his wit and humour but his dramatic roles in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets and Patch Adams and The Fisher King we're inspiring movies that impacted my life. It's so sad when a man loses or can't find hope. Fame, success, wealth are empty without hope. God bless you Robin Williams.

What a shock! We were born the same year. I loved all of his work, especially his improvisation. The talk show hosts could not keep up with him when he got going. He will be missed for all the joy he brought to millions.

Robin Williams is one of my all time favorite comedians. I always loved his improvisation he was one of the best. I always loved when he and Jonathan Winters got together. They were two of my favorite comedians.

Suicide is a tough pill. We, or most of us experience some degree of depression at some point(s). What brings a person to cross that bridge as an acceptable alternative? Sometimes it seems to be the best & brightest who are most affected?
I'm probably not alone on this board in knowing friends who have committed suicide. With some I wasn't that surprised in hindsight.

A talk show today on CBC was asking people to phone in and say what he meant to them and why it was such a blow that he committed suicide. Amongst the callers were two diametricaly opposed opinions both were people who suffered depression. One said that knowing that even a person with such talent, fame and compassion could be so depressed to take their life it made him feel good that he has been able to battle with it and survives. Another guy phoned in and said that he was really down because if a guy that has that kind of money and contacts and still can't get the demon to go away how could the small person.
Glass half empty or half full but such harsh consequences if the glass becomes void of liquid altogether. If any good can come from this is that people have a better understanding about the subject and reach out to someone that might be headed down that path.

Much appreciated post, John. A tough subject with tough resolve. There's been a lot of suicides in our tight little community lately. I am open learning while I mourn the many losses.

Sadly, I am at about 7 and counting. Coming from a town of about 30,000, that is astounding. I still haven't come to grips with the loss of one of my closest childhood friends. This just brings it back. It is difficult.

I heard the news late and am saddened by it. Robin brought so much laughter to so many. He was a real national treasure. Here is some insight to depression for some of you. I've been there, as it grabs me periodically. There is more than one kind of depression, Robin had the "clinical" type, which means that it is a "disease", not caused by outside influences. Depression seems to make no sense to those who haven't suffered it. And suicide seems to be irrational to someone who has so much going for him. But depression screws up your thinking process, that is, it can make you irrational. 1+1 can equal "3" to someone who is depressed. A depressed person can come to the wrong conclusions when confronted with stressful situations. And, sometimes, and I think this is true in Robins case, he was just so darn tired of suffering with his disease that he couldn't take it any more. There is an old saying that goes something like this, "God never gives you more suffering than you can handle". I always thought that was a dumb saying as it is obviously not true. Intense suffering can break a man. One thing for sure, by most accounts, Robin was a good fella. I'll bet he's got St. Peter and the crowd in stiches!

Billie Crystal did a fine tribute to his friend Robin Williams on the Emmies this evening, no question about cutting to a commercial immediately there must have been many a wet eye in the audience.

Even at his most manic, there was always a sad frailty in the back of his eyes. I'm 46 and I grew up with him...none were funnier (more funny) whichever... This, though probably not written by him, is probably one of the best pieces of acting ever. http://youtu.be/qM-gZintWDc
