I traded the Triumph on a new Harley Davidson...go ahead take your shots.
I looked at the Triumph Thunderbird and Storm a lot. Their big displacement torque just makes acceleration and cruising at high speed easy and relaxed. Problem is like I've said before they look like a Honda VTX with a parallel twin engine transplant, the style just doesn't hit me. They are also about 80 pounds overweight but the fit, finish and quality is excellent.

A couple of years ago I ordered my wife the bike she wanted a factory custom color (white metallic with pink flames) Harley Sportster 1200. So owning this bike cut through the anti-Harley trash talk I've heard because it's been a fun and reliable motorcycle. I've always liked the Harley Wide Glide style(maybe because I grew up in the 1970's) and the dealer in Virginia beach got one in Vivid Black, many have the optional flame tank paint. This is one of the last 2014s built in June 2014 at the Kansas City Missouri factory while the 103ci engine was built at the Menomonee Falls Wisconsin engine factory USA. Yes, that matters to me. It doesn't sit well with me that Triumph a brand that wraps itself in the Union Jack just as much as Harley does the Stars And Stripes builds all Americas,Speedmasters, Bonnevilles and many other bikes in Thailand for cheap labor.

The bike is a much different ride than the Triumph of course. While breaking in the engine I have to keep the RPM below 3,000 for the first 500 miles, the bike had 3 miles on it when I took delivery PDI check and to the gas station and back. In 6th gear 60mph is 2,200 rpm and at 3,000 rpm it's running 90 miles per hour and still pulling. The first thing I did was replace the mufflers with Vance and Hines slip ons and the sound is incredible a nice low tone with a touch of "burble" on deceleration. No re-tune of the ECM was needed for just slip ons according to the dealership techs and they were right. oh, and I pulled off all of those damn stick on reflectors the government requires.

The dealership personnel loved my Triumph trade and it is the only non-Harley used bike kept on display in the showroom during the day, all other used bikes are parked outside.

They gave me a Harley accessory catalog when I took delivery and it is 888 pages, this does not include the separate Screamin Eagle performance catalog!

Notice the license plate was transferred from my 2011 Triumph Bonneville America.

The night I took delivery a severe thunderstorm was moving through Virginia Beach and the electricity was knocked out. I said "crap, I really wanted to ride it home tonight." They said "no problem" and finished all the paperwork hand written (no computers) by flashlight. Just before I left the rain stopped and the power came back on so I got to ride a 100ftlb torque brand new bike home on unscuffed tires on wet roads!

FINALLY. Now maybe we will be spared from all the threads of how Harley's are so great and Triumphs suck. Good luck on the Harley boards. I guess this was your parting shot of posting this in the lounge instead of other bikes. If I was a moderator I would move it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Best of luck and Happy Trails.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Sorry Paul, but I'm gonna have to disagree with ya here, as I always got the impression that on the whole OB was attempting to be fair and evenhanded with most of his expressed thoughts around here, and didn't seem to succumb to any "rose-colored glasses" and/or "peer pressure-induced" opinions.

(...aaaah, but then again, I know SOME folks will often misconstrue such as thing as "Bashing" LOL...NOT that I'm necessarily referring to you here, of course!)

Naw, around here it's hard baggers. Great big 1,000lb Ultra Classics with more trunk room than a Buick.

Although the Sportsters especially the Forty Eight are getting popular.

I expected some good shots from some members here but your tone is offensive. So I will call you out: Post links to "all the threads of how Harley's are so great and Triumphs suck" that you claim I posted. Go ahead, let's put them in context. By the way one example Triumph does better than Harley is all of their air cooled bikes have a large oil cooler standard...Harley only sells them as a dealer installed accessory.

"Parting shot" right, I've proudly posted pictures of my Triumph here several times. As far as posting it here in the lounge you didn't have a problem when people post that they purchased a new Indian or some other brand of motorcycle here. Funny thing, the years I owned my Triumph and put 19,000 miles on it I never had a negative comment from a Harley owner...not one. Even all the people I met in Sturgis and the customers looking over my bike in the Harley showroom when I went back to pick up some accessories I ordered. They didn't know it was my trade I just quietly listened to the positive comments. Seems to me there is a lot more hate flowing from the Triumph owners against Harley than the other way around.

I meant no offense, just to be clear. I am so used to ribbing my friends that ride HD it is just a reflex action. I actually had to trailer my SM home today, I had a catastrophic rear tire failure with my grandson on the back. Rode it out and a guy that owns a HD next to where I stopped gave me a ride home to get my trailer. (felt just like a HD owner! )

You know when I traded my Honda in to buy the Triumph the Honda owners said the same thing "good luck with that Brit bike...you'll need it!"

As it turned out the Triumph was perfectly reliable not one problem.

Ahh, the two copy cat V-twins. So starting with a clean sheet why did Victory build their entire line on V-twin engines when they could have used parallel twins a design which everyone here knows is superior to the V for air cooled engines? And Indian...it would have been more uniquely Indian to build in-line 4-cylinder engines for their new bikes like their classic 402.

But no, both of the Polaris brands played "follow the leader" just another Harley V-twin copy like the Japanese cruisers. Something I appreciated about Triumph was the company staying true to their heritage with parallel twin and triple engines.

Not bad looking, much better than the experimental styling of a few years ago, like that thing with the silly flip-flop passenger seat.

I am somewhat disappointed regarding the negative shots thrown concerning your new bike. But I suppose it was meant in good fun (I hope so) and you handled it better than I might have. Meanwhile, enjoy your new ride and please do stop by from time to time. I especially want to hear from you regarding your experience and overall impression on that new ride of yours.

That's a good point OB, especially considering one of Indian's most famous and now one of THE most sought after models by collectors are the Indian-4s.

Ya know, there is a company presently making a sort of an updated Indian-4 called the "Dakota". It's a rather strange looking bike with rather odd proportions, but I'll bet Polaris could design one that would come out lookin' a lot better.

I had never heard of the Dakota and I wondered how they could keep the last three cylinders cool without a big ol' ugly radiator. Then I Googled it and I see why you like it Dwight. FINS!

Yep, you got it, Steve..."FINS"!!!

But yeah, like I said, the proportions of that bike are a little off. I think maybe it's the wheels. They look a little small compared to the rest of the bike.

(...it ALMOST reminds me of a four cylinder Mustang motorcycle, if you remember those)

If the Bio is correct, this guy owns the rights to the Indian name in the UK? Odd. And I wonder how much THAT will cost Polaris to remedy?

Yeah, that's an interesting little bit of info, isn't it. If it's true, the guy COULD have Polaris a little bit by the short hairs.

Ah, one of the Keyboard Captains of Industry is back!

Victory and Indian use v-twins because that is what heavyweight cruiser riders like. Very simple.

For Indian to have made a new Inline 4 in 2014 could have been suicide. See above. Springfield Indian made w-a-y more v-twin machines than I4s.
That being said, there are LOTs of people hoping that Indian makes a modern I4 engine someday, likely to go in a heavyweight touring machine.

To be clear, The Leader is Indian, which made a v-twin before Harley. Just sayin'...

So, the question your really have to ask yourself is not why do other brands make v-twins?
It's why do other brands make them so much better than Harley?

I think Indian made really cool V-twins. They made the V-twin I think about 3 years before HD and they were the first to make the chain drive. I also believe they made the first 4 valve cylinder in a motorcycle.

I guess HD copied Indian for motor design and Indian and Triumph for drive power via chain.

I think the vertical twin is better as far as cooling goes than the V twin, yes ,but even better is the horizontally opposed twin.

I agree but you can get more torque with less engineering on a longer stroke. As most of us don't care about higher RPMs but more low end power the V makes more torque with less Rs. When air cooled lower RPM ranges are preferred with the varying temps. You can compensate with higher RPMs to make Horsepower but the faster you spin it hotter it gets.

Thats why we left the flat motors behind and made the V-8 etc.

I think

I agree but you can get more torque with less engineering on a longer stroke. As most of us don't care about higher RPMs but more low end power the V makes more torque with less Rs. When air cooled lower RPM ranges are preferred with the varying temps. You can compensate with higher RPMs to make Horsepower but the faster you spin it hotter it gets.

Thats why we left the flat motors behind and made the V-8 etc.

I think

Tell that to the boys in Stuttgart Germany, Ron.

(...specifically to the boys at a certain factory with a name that starts with the letter "P".

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I just said that. You can spin a square engine faster to make HP but it takes more engineering. For a cruiser motorcycle it makes sense to build the V-twin or a V-4 like the old Magna from Honda.

Well, as I'm sure ya know Ron, one of the primary reasons the V-twin engine became so popular in motorcycles was because early motorcycles were basically just bicycles with engines placed inside their frames. And the way bicycle frames are designed with the down-tube going down to the pedal crank and meeting there with the seat post tube creating a "V" shape, made a V-twin shape engine a natural to fit into that space if more than a single-cylinder motorcycle was desired.

Yes, it was the logical way to do it. Then BMW and Triumph messed it all up. I will tell you when I sit on the Thunderbird then sit on my Kingpin the Tbrd seems really fat. Its that big motor side by side with the tank covering it. But they have been able to get some HP out of it.
