I had two Corvairs, rolled both of them. One in a parking lot, when I cranked the wheel hard at 15 MPH. Their unsafe reputation is richly deserved.

Maybe, but the VW Beetle was worse, and for the same reason. The rear wheels tended to tuck under. Nader just didn't want to hit VW when GM was available. I've owned and driven both types and only rolled the Corvair because I put it in a ditch when I was 16.

I didn't know that about the bug, I owned several and used them off road ,very hard too, and never even came close to rolling one.

Back in the day, I saw many VW Bugs and Rabbits compete in gymkhana races and do well. Albeit on two wheels in turns.

Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

I had a '62 Monza Spyder Convertible for a while. It handled much better with a sandbag over each of the front wheels.

Bugs? Those that didn't get turned into sand rails, we brutalized at the beach and in the local dunes. A few years back, I started thinking about simplifying my life (again) and test drove a couple that I found. Man, they sure got smaller inside.

Corvair, the American Robin? I would still love to have a convertible with the rear clip that copied the Corvette Stingray (Monza?). The sandbags trick sounds recommendable.

Just look at that 2x4 seat framing. Pure Engineering Genius! I wonder if I should request that kind of artistry from Sargent's when they start on my Tacoma seats on Wednesday?

A lot of the first generation corvairs burnt up because they decided to stretch the battery cable over the edge of the air shroud. A lot melted down too because of the silly way they routed the fan belt. If you turned the radio too loud and forgot to listen to make sure the fan was still shrieking, the belt would come off and the engine would fry.

Mine just blew oil out the rear grille (under the bumper). If I remember correctly, that fan belt was twisted by design.

About an hour ago, I stumbled across an old Kodak slide of my Corvair pulling my Apache pop-up camper. Oh, the simple days.

The belt made the usual two 180 degree turns at the pulleys on the crank and the fan but also made two 90 degree turns, that turned the belt in the other axis, since the fan was horizontal on top of the engine and the crank was vertical on the rear. Worst belt design I've ever seen. I used to carry two spares since just a single spare didn't guarantee you'd make it to your destination.
